v8.0.7.3 Create Protected Disc not enabled

In the beta version the Create Protected Disc was both enabled and selected by default on a Cinavia disc. In 8.0.7.3 it recognizes The Other Guys as Cinavia protected but it does not allow me to select Create Protected Disc -- see screen shot attached!

      Is it a Lite-On drive?
Please look in settings, Info page and tell us what's in there for your drive... you should see AACS version: 1, Number of concurent AGID, etc... or post a shot of that page.

Unfortunately, your drive does not support the creation of protected backups. This thing is checked in 8073 and the relevant checkboxes are now disabled. Sorry about that.

            Oh ... crap.

Can we keep a sticky thread of which drives are known to support and not support Protected Backups?

That would be a good idea.
Don't know why Lite-On didn't bother to implement "binding nonce generation" feature. If you look at the log, they didn't even bother to put their name at Vendor, it says "ATAPI" (which is an interface and not a vendor name)

Is this something that could conceivably be corrected with a firmware update?

Certainly it could. But I'm not so sure how keen are Lite-on to implement it at a later moment if they didn't do it in the first place. You can write them to ask why they didn't and if they plan to. It would be interesting to hear from them.

Technically, the binding nonce is written in a certain sector, in the hidden part, aside from the sector normally written data. So its no biggie for them to add the feature, it only matters if they want to.

As far as I know, Lite-On has always used "Atapi" in their ID. Don't forget, Lite-On is a very large oem manufacturer of drives and their drives show up with all sorts of ce brand names stuck on the front face plate - which may be why they stay with a generic ID name.
The idea of compiling a list of burners that are, and are not, capable of burning protected BDs (including the upcoming BDAV solution?) sounds like a terrific idea.

I have the same drive as you dbooksta, I did a firmware update on mine but still no support for "binding nonce generation" (it looks like my firmware is 1 version up from the one you have) if you want to update anyway, you can use Lite-On's "Smart Pack" program, its easy, you just install the program and run it, it will check what drive you have and firmware and automatically download and update it for you
