When I record in BD50 I can do a "main movie" in about an hour. When I have to switch to BD25 for the "main movie" to fit, it can take anywhere from 7 to 10 hours just to download it. Is there any reason for this and can the time be shortened?

You are compressing 50gb file to 25gb file it going to take long time especially if you do this from the source Blu-ray. If you already have file on hard drive and compress from that the time will not take so long. If you want faster results get better computer that has Quad core CPU and CUDA enabled graphics card
