very slow compression from hdd to hdd?

Found out this morning there is an updated version that I will download but.....
Last night I tried to compress a 50 gb file down to a 25 gb file on my hdd.
It took over 6 hours to compress. This this normal? Should I expect that kind of wait every time? The write time took around 40 minutes which I'm very impressed with. But the compression time Shsssh! Please advise with any help possible! Here's my log for these sessions:

You would need to include your PC specifications in order for someone to estimate. Six hours would be appropriate for a 2-3 year old PC. Blu-ray has about 4x more data than a DVD and is better compressed (takes more time to uncompress and re-compress).
