New Computer - nothing but coasters

I recently got a new desktop with what I've been told are pretty good components: Windows 7 - 64 bit; AMD Radeon 6850 1GB DDR5 graphics card; intel core i7 processor; 16GB DDR3 Ram; 2TB 7200 rpm hard drive, and so on. I would imagine that this would allow me to use DVDFab really well. Guess again!

The newest version 8.1.7.8 Qt is NOT working out with this setup. I read another post wherein another group member noted it wasn't working for him either and how he had reverted back to v.8085. I tried installing it but DVDFab would not let me use it prompting me that I had to upgrade. Yeah, to what effect?

MI4 took 4.5 hours to compress and failed in the middle of burning. Actually, my old clunker was able to compress MI4 in 4.5 hours also and burned a copy that is mostly decent (it freezes here and there, but I blame this on how this BD was manufactured). I tried burning another BD title, which took about 1 half hour to compress, but this one wouldn't even burn.

Thus, here I am with a decent pc and nothing but coasters from DVDFab...

If these newer Qt versions are not really working out, could we at least be able to use the older versions without being forced by DvdFab to upgrade to newer versions that are not quite ready for prime time?

I don't know how the rest of the group members feel but I'm certainly not happy with it.

While I am at it, has anyone figured out a way to circumvent v8.1.7.8Qt and not end up with coasters? I'd appreciate the feedback.

BTW, does anyone have any idea of how to retrieve information stored in an external hard drive that the computer no longer recognizes? I have this one that was working until yesterday. Today neither pc recognizes it. I can't say that it is "dead" since it makes a noise as if it were running along with an intermittent beep sound, but that is it! I'd appreciate any input since I have a lot of important information on this drive that I would like to retrieve.

Burning Module

What burning module are are you using

To be honest with you, and I don't mean to be disrespectful, but I have no idea of what a burning module is, nor what I used.

I imagine you might be referring to VSO (I believe this is it - although it might be something else). I have tried ImgBurn in the past but found it didn't work all that well. Thus, I use whatever comes with the DVDFab version I'm using.

Did I totally misunderstand you?

First I would say disable Lightning-Recoding and make sure all your settings are set to Software.
Open Fab click the Click the Green √ at top right corner of the DVD Fab screen, and open Common Settings > General >A/V Codec, put a check in Disable all GPU codes and make sure they are set to Software, un-check Enable Lightning-Recoding restart Fab and try again.

Please do not compress from your drive
First save it to your HDD as "Main Movie" BD50 without compression.
Then open the hard drive folder, select BD25 to compress to another folder on your hard drive.
Use the "Write Data" mode of Fab to open this COMPRESSED folder and burn to a disk.
Doing it this way saves wear and tear on your optical drive and is also faster.

I would say to check the cables and the power going to the HDD

Please follow all his suggestions...definitely disable LR.

As to your ext hdd, as suggested, the beeping is most likely related to a power supply issue.
I suspect your data is ok. I doubt the integrity of the platters themselves has been compromised.

How is it connected/powered?...usb, AC adapter...?
Please swap out the cables, adapter

If the power supply is via your usb port, you'll have to check the internal, 5-volt cable connections

First of all I apologize for taking so long to respond and thank you for your help. You solved my problem and I was able to burn two subsequent discs (no coasters this time around). I actually saved your comments in case I ever need to refer to them again. Good job!

I do have a question about copying 50GB discs to the internal HD then compressing them to 25GB there. I tried it on one of the discs I burned and it took me an additional 19 minutes. Does compressing really do that much damage to a BD drive? I will probably follow your advice since you were right on the money about the rest - most of the time anyway...

Think about it. When you compress a blu-ray disc to 25gb or less, it takes how long - 10 hours, 14 hours, 20 hours? All that time, if you are writing directly to your blu-ray writer, it is running. In addition, besides running the blu-ray writer during all this time, there is a much greater chance that an interruption in the stream will result in a coaster.

If you burn it to your hard drive, it is also running all that time, but hard drives were built for that kind of use. Also, there is less chance of a data stream interruption ruining the final output. In addition, by compressing it to the hard drive first, you can test the end product (the compressed output) to make sure it works before you burn it to a disc.
