    New to blu ray

Hi guys. Ive been using dvd fab for years, but just jumped on board with backing up/copying blu rays. I just purchased a Pioneer BDR-XD04. I tried full disc a few times and made a few coasters. I got on the forum and tried to resolve my issues with the info posted in this forum. I do have the logs from my previous attempts but I thought I would try what I have learned first then post if I make another coaster.

So, I took the advice from cbr929 and disabled all gpu codes and unchecked lightning recording.

Im now going to do a main copy to hdd then convert to 25g then burn to disc with dvd fab. Is this the recommended process? Can I only do main movie or can I also do full disc this way?
As far as copying to hdd, do I always create a miniso file? Im not familiar with what that does so I have to do some reading.
Lastly, once I have the disc on my hdd is there something I click to convert to 25g? Sorry that may be a silly question but the disc is copying as I type this. Thanks for your help

You can do main movie and full disc that way.

No, you don't need to create a mini iso file but it's helpful if you want to create a disk image.

Thanks for the reply. I successfully copied the main movie to hdd and it took around 30 minutes or so. Big improvement from initial attempt. So the next step is to convert to 25g. Whats the recommended way to do that? load the 50g in dvdfab and compress to 25g? Then load the 25g and use write data?

Yes, just compress the 50GB to the HDD to 25GB. Load the 25GB file in Fab and burn it.

I have never understood why people feel it's necessary to convert to a 25GB file & then later burn that 25GB file using DVDFab. It can be accomplished in basically 1 step.

If you have a file on your HDD that is larger than 25GB, whether it be Main Movie or entire disc, drag & drop it into DVDFab, & then set the Quality to 25GB. Set the Target to the optical drive that you will be using to do the burning. Then all you have to do is click on the Start button. DVDFab will create a "temporary" file that is the size needed for a 25GB disc. That will not actually be 25GB by the way. DVDFab will then use that "temporary" file to burn to disc. If set up properly in DVDFab's menu, that "temporary" file will then be erased after the burn is complete.

Another thing that I never see mentioned is using 2 different Internal HDDs if possible. DVDFab is set up to create that "temporary" file on the same drive that DVDFab is created. Usually your operating systems HDD. For me that would be my C Drive. If you originally had DVDFab rip that Main Movie to your C Drive & then have DVDFab create & use a temporary file on that same C Drive, the process will be slowed down. The reason is that the C Drive will have to do both, read & write, on the same drive. If you set up the temporary file to be created on a different internal HDD, say your F Drive, the 1 drive will be doing the reading & the other drive will be doing the writing. An alternative would be to have DVDFab rip the original file to a 2nd internal HDD & keep the temporary files destination the way DVDFab originally set it up.

I have done it both ways, using 1 HDD to all the work & using 2 HDD. Trust me using 2 HDD is much faster.

            Ripping to HDD

Just as a matter of interest ( I don't burn BD rips) my normal method is:
            a) Copy BD 'Main Movie' as an M2TS to the D drive of my main HDD - This is a partitioned HDD, C and D , with C being the operating system files drive and D being my data files drive, but as I say, physically, it is the same drive
            b) I then, if required, use BD Ripper to rip to MKV from the BD copy on the D drive to an external ESATA HDD/NAS (F Drive) for streaming

So, am I beating up my internal HDD (C and D) drive by copying the main movie from the BD to the D drive? Should I instead be copying the original BD movie straight to the ESATA drive?

            Hope this makes sense..... Thanks

Nope, seems to me that's exactly what you should be doing.

Thanks for the info guys. What I did do was main copy to hdd at 50g. Then loaded the 50g file to fab and converted while I burnt to external blu ray drive. Another coaster! Here is the log. Please let me know if you see any problems

*Sigh* It's been said so many times here before by long time members, mods and admins. It causes wear and tear on your blu-ray drive if you compress and burn in 1 step to a BD-R disc. Just do a search on these forums and get some advice from people who've been doing this since the advent of DVDFab Blu-ray Copy and BD writers in general. And trust me, I don't mean myself.

Well I believe you would be wrong. It causes excessive wear & tear on your Blu-Ray optical drive when you are Ripping & compressing at the same time. That is because the optical drive would be working/running the entire time. When you are compressing & Burning at the same time the Blu-Ray drive sits idle while DVDFab compresses & creates the temporary file. Once the temporary file is created, then & only then, will the Blu-Ray drive start up to do the writing.

This is my belief, so if anyone has information to the contrary, please feel free to chime in.

Just to clarify a bit (could possibly save on further arguments). I have seen these 2 terms mixed up quite a bit on these forums.

Ripping = Taking the video from a disc & getting it to your computers Hard Drive

Burning = Taking a video from your computers Hard Drive & putting onto a disc.

You, sir, are correct. My bad... serves me right for getting up early and replying on the internet before my coffee.

I got mixed up with compressing from the BD writer as opposed to compressing it from the HDD. In an awakened state, I would have been able to differentiate easily since I do it every time I back up my discs. However, what tripped me up is the fact that I choose to burn my discs in ImgBurn independently of DVDFab. That's where I got the transfer to HDD and then open it up in Fab again and burn. I substituted "ImgBurn" for Fab and there you have it. Again, apologies.

Not a problem at all. Just a bit of a misunderstanding. Happens all the time.

Hey Guys interesting thread. I love the tip about using multiple HDD's to convert.Always tend to work on my desktop > makes for an easy clean up when finished but I will definitely try spreading it out now.

ChrisB you must be disappointed with the coaster count. I wonder if you were to do the 50gig to 25gig as an ISO to your hdd before writing to disc you might reduce the coasters. You can play the ISO with Fab's media player (free)
to see if you have been successful to that stage at least. Then it just comes down to your burning process I guess.
Lots of areas there you can go wrong > write speed and media brand to name a couple. I rip to hdd MKV or ISO for playback through a media player and would definitely recommend that as to superior to disc backup but to each there own.

I assume you are using Image Burn (if not you should - its free). Maybe when you have a playable 25Gig ISO you could try dragging it into Fab and do disc copy from there. There is info on this sight for setting up Fab to burn with Image Burn automatically and again I would recommend you go down that path. You shouldn't have to go through this many steps normally but I have always found when I have a problem it helps to break things down as much as possible to try and isolate where you problem is. Hope you nail it soon

He's right. I've been doing this from day one copying my BD movies and it is much faster as opposed to using the same HDD your OS is on. I actually have like five 2TB HDDs now. Plan on doing a lot of watching from my HDDs on my TV through my computer.
