Red Dog R2 stuttery and slow to convert

Red Dog R2 took nearly three hours to compress to a BD9 (main movie). Experience tells me that this means all is not well so I checked the M2TS file and it was indeed jerky and stuttery - so I aborted before wasting a disc. Here is the log, but it doesn't indicate the 3 hours it took.

I have had quite a few jerky discs over the last few months, maybe 5%. This is my first disc with 8.1.9.6.

Disable all GPU codecs checked
Enable lightning recoding not checked

You should always compress from HDD, not your disc drive.

Tried 'HDD first' for speed issues I'm having (15+ hrs read/write) with 8.1.9.6-didn't help.
