Hi All, I apologize in advance for this long posting but I thought I would share my recent experiences with the latest Beta versions of DVDFab Blu Ray Copy.
Before 8.1.9.9 came out with the feature to copy main movie only to/from 3D, I tried the option to compress full disc BD-50 to BD-25 with mixed results. In all cases, I cloned the original disk to my external hard disk first, and then I used DVDFab Blu Ray Copy with the Full Disc/Copy as 3D option to another folder in the same external hard disk. The duration of the compression varied from 12-16 hours, depending on the length of the movie. Then I used DVDFab to back up the compressed folder to BD-25 disks using the DVDFab Burning Engine option as recommended in one of the threads in this Forum. Unfortunately, DVDFab Media Player does not support 3D so I ended up wasting a couple of BD-25 discs with trial and error attempts but so far it has been definitely worth it not having to use 50-GB disks! BTW, I have not been able to find another 3D Blu Ray player that will work with my passive 3D TV and glasses so I am patiently waiting for DVDFab Media Player to support 3D as advertised.
SUCCESSFUL COMPRESSIONS/BACKUPS - meaning compression from .iso image to Blu Ray folder worked fine and backups to BD-25 discs play fine on my 3D Blu Ray Player (All original sources of the movies below are Region A and 3D, of course):
Darkest Hour
Green Lantern
Gulliver’s Travels (the remake with Jack Black)
John Carter
Journey 2: Mysterious Island
Kung Fu Panda 1
Kung Fu Panda 2
The Last Airbender
The Lion King
Puss in Boots
Sanctum
UNSUCCESSFUL COMPRESSIONS/BACKUPS – meaning compression and/or burning did not work. In some cases DVDFab got stuck during compression, or compression finished but the output folder was > 25GB so I could not back it up to disk. Unfortunately, I did not keep any of the logs because I kept getting frustrated after waiting so many hours only to find out the attempts failed. In short, during these attempts I was not organized well enough to keep track of the issues and to save the corresponding logs. Anyway here is the list of the attempts that did not work for me – all using the Full Disc/Copy as 3D to BD-25:
Captain America
How to Train Your Dragon
Ice Age 3- Dawn of the Dinosaurs
Piranha
Then version 8.1.9.9 came out with the new (and so welcome) feature to copy movie only using the Copy as 3D option. So far I have successfully backed up the movies below (the same ones that failed using the Full Disc compression to BD-25), movie only, to BD-25 but please note the caveat below:
Ice Age 3- Dawn of the Dinosaurs
Piranha
Captain America is currently running (with version 8.2.0.0 that was just released) and will then re-try How to Train Your Dragon.
CAVEAT: This issue came up trying to burn both Ice Age 3- Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Piranha to the BD-25 disks. I tried each one twice (and wasted 4 disks). The first attempt at each, I selected “Movie only” with “Copy as 3D” selected. I noticed that the size shown at the bottom was 14-15GB and wasn’t sure why so I proceeded anyway. In both cases, the result was the 2D version of the Blu Ray movie. The second attempt at each I tried using “Full Disc”, which did not let me select “Copy as 3D”. Again both times the resulting BD-25 discs had the 2D version of the movie. Finally I tried the option “Wite Data” and Bingo! I got perfect 3D BD-25 movies. Of course, no menus were copied but the movies ARE divided in chapters so I can skip chapters, which is not possible in “Movie only” copies of regular 2D Blu Ray movies. I hope this is of some help to someone else experimenting with 3D movies.
