I have an AIOS and you don't have to install an HDD but why wouldn't you? It is a hot swap bay and it takes about 10 seconds. I have an HDD dock so swapping and loading is a snap. If you happen to have an external optical drive just plug it into one of the USB ports and have a Cinavia free disc player as well.

That was the idea getting rid of the disc and saving a whole lot of money they cost way to much compared to hdds. Feeding the media player an ISO is so simple more simple than burning to a disc. They are pretty close to perfect.media player is the answer to all my media needs for you disc may be great but for me taking a pile of disc with me were ever I go is not convenient I prefer having them on usb stick(s) every device has usb plug and I don't loan my media out that's a big nono if I wanted to watch movies wile I was at my mother in laws I would stream my media unpn server and for Sony well lets say the Only Sony product I got left is my bd burner and I think there far from the best just go take a poll of ps3 owners and ask what they think anyways this are my thoughts on that matter

I have a question re: a media player. Can you feed it a blu ray file (full disc mode on dvdfab) from an ntfs formatted hard drive. This is how I watch some of my back up copies via AVCHD Manager (tool used to set default movie). This way I get the whole blu-ray including previews, menus, etc with no compression of video or sound. I do own a Cinavia free player but was curious of another alternative for my bedroom. Thanks 2 anyone who responds.

Yep - players licensed prior to February can remain free of cinavia. My understanding is that the current Oppo models are also cinavia free. I plan to stick with my Sony models all licensed & made prior to February, 2012 and be extra careful what firmware updates are applied, because there is no guarantee that the next firmware update won't include something you do not want, and we know of no way to go back afterwards.

it's the OP's Mom we are discussing here . . .

You and I obviously have different needs and therefore a different approach to our HD viewing convenience. It's nice that there are multiple solutions to these things for folks to choose from. I guess the OP will have to decide what works best for his Mom and proceed accordingly.

I understand why folks advocate media players - and that's fine - but they are not the answer to everything. I'd rather have my movie on a disc I can take with me, play in my laptop, play in the mountain cabin, loan to family members or friends, etc.
If one is going to have an optical media player, my experience with Sony says they are among the best ones out there.

Stay away from those Sony products and bd players are a big waste you could pick up a decent media player for the same price and do t have to ever worry about cinavia plus save you some hard earned money no more disc

My favorite player is the BDP-S1000ES - similar vintage as the S550, still free of cinavia and it has been a great performer for me.
If you do not need the multi-channel analog audio outputs in a player, you might find a nice BDP-S350 somewhere for less than a S550. The S350 is essentially the same player as the S550 without the multi-channel analog outputs.

"ever" is a very long time. you should be careful and diligent.

However, so far, as best I can tell, the only Sony standalone players that have cinavia processing activated via firmware are the x80 and s90 based series. I believe your 5000es uses the same firmware as the s350 & s550. I have loaded & tested firmware 026 (the newest USA release) on both models s350 & s550 and they both work fine and remain cinavia free. I would expect firmware 026 to be free of cinavia in your s5000es also. But, I have not tested that.
Firmware 014 (for the S1000es) is also cinavia free.
But I don't figure that guarantees the next firmware release will also be clean of cinavia, so be careful out there . . . .
