    Something strange with Cinavia...

Something unusual happened with v9.0.7.0 backing up a Cinavia protected Blu-Ray disc. The title of the disc is "This is the End" and DVDFab gave me the Cinavia warning when I copied the disc. I then tested the copy in the DVDFab Virtual Drive using PowerDVD 12 version 12.0.14371.2428. The folder played perfectly from the hard drive. I then burned the folder to a Verbatim BD-R 25Gb blank media using the DVDFab burning engine. The burned BD also played fine in the PowerDVD player.

I have a Panasonic DMP-BDT310 player which does not recognize Cinavia. Once again, the disc played perfectly. Then, on a whim, I put the burned BD in my PS3. It is the original model with the 80Gb hard drive. The only thing that is unique about the console is it's the only PS3 that is backwards compatible with PS2 games. It has the v4.50 update installed. It is my understanding that the Cinavia copy should NOT work in this console, but it played without error messages and with what seemed to be the same sound quality - full DTS HD - as the title had in the Panasonic player.

I then put the burned BD back in my BD drive in the PC and opened up Fab. When the program analyzed the disc, the Cinavia warning is now missing.

I have no idea if any of this information is useful to anyone, but it appears that DVDFab managed to produce a copy that the PS3 does not see as being Cinavia protected. Both players use v1.4 HDMI cables into an Onkyo TX-NR809 receiver and then out to a Samsung 64" plasma also using an HDMI v1.4 cable.

If you can think of any additional information that might help me understand why the copy seems to not have the Cinavia protection, please let me know.

An additional note is that I conducted a second test with the "After Earth" BD which I did not need to back up as I won't watch it again anytime soon. It definitely has Cinavia protection and it also produced a clean copy that plays in the PS3 with the v4.5 update installed.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to why this is working now?

What I think is your not playing the disk long enough as Cinavia kicks in at the 20 min. mark so try playing past 20 mins on the playstation.Power dvd 11 is not infected with Cinavia I don't know about version 12 &13.

I don't think Fab warns you a second time that the disk is infected with Cinavia as once you know it's infected the first time why warn you a second time? Most of us know this is mostly on Sony disks anyway.

Both play all the way through...

Both burned titles, This is the End and After Earth, play all the way through on the PS3 with the 4.50 update installed without errors or messages. I do understand Cinavia's effects and when they occur.

PowerDVD 12 (upd: 1905c or higher) and 13 have Cinavia built into their code.

Ok then Fab can make a protected disk for the PlayStation by checking that option when Cinavia is detected the choice comes up on the opening page theirs a check box that you put a check in that says make protected disk.Fab tricked the PlayStation into thinking it was playing a protected disk so it played a smart trick for the time and only software company to do this.

It only works for the PlayStation up to the software date that comes up with the Cinavia message from Fab.This was a old workaround that was for the older firmware.Newer updates came out and it didn't work for the newer updates in firmware past the date listed with the message from Fab.

If yours does work past that date then its only for older machines.I use to have a older machine with a 20 gig hard drive i think it was the first one.It didn't work on that machine after the newer firmware date listed by Fab in the Fab message.

When that happened most of us with the PlayStation went to media players that are unaffected by Cinavia we were pissed and because of it now protest any electronics built by Sony and will not buy from them that's history here.
