Something unusual happened with v9.0.7.0 backing up a Cinavia protected Blu-Ray disc. The title of the disc is "This is the End" and DVDFab gave me the Cinavia warning when I copied the disc. I then tested the copy in the DVDFab Virtual Drive using PowerDVD 12 version 12.0.14371.2428. The folder played perfectly from the hard drive. I then burned the folder to a Verbatim BD-R 25Gb blank media using the DVDFab burning engine. The burned BD also played fine in the PowerDVD player.
I have a Panasonic DMP-BDT310 player which does not recognize Cinavia. Once again, the disc played perfectly. Then, on a whim, I put the burned BD in my PS3. It is the original model with the 80Gb hard drive. The only thing that is unique about the console is it's the only PS3 that is backwards compatible with PS2 games. It has the v4.50 update installed. It is my understanding that the Cinavia copy should NOT work in this console, but it played without error messages and with what seemed to be the same sound quality - full DTS HD - as the title had in the Panasonic player.
I then put the burned BD back in my BD drive in the PC and opened up Fab. When the program analyzed the disc, the Cinavia warning is now missing.
I have no idea if any of this information is useful to anyone, but it appears that DVDFab managed to produce a copy that the PS3 does not see as being Cinavia protected. Both players use v1.4 HDMI cables into an Onkyo TX-NR809 receiver and then out to a Samsung 64" plasma also using an HDMI v1.4 cable.
If you can think of any additional information that might help me understand why the copy seems to not have the Cinavia protection, please let me know.
An additional note is that I conducted a second test with the "After Earth" BD which I did not need to back up as I won't watch it again anytime soon. It definitely has Cinavia protection and it also produced a clean copy that plays in the PS3 with the v4.5 update installed.
Does anyone have any thoughts as to why this is working now?
