    newbie questions on b/u blu-ray

OK, the boys got their ps-3 , now they want to watch b/r movies with it too and i'm a little (ha) reluctant to let them play with $25.00 discs.....so I'm checking out what's involved in using DVD-9 & 5 discs to B/U the real ones, I've been reading all the guides and some posts and I believe I can rip the movie to my HD to DVD-9 or 5 folders using DVDFab , do I still need to use shrink to encode it to an ISO file? also, will I be able to burn with my SONY 840A dvd DL burner? System Info below.

    Thanks

No need for shrink, Fab will create an iso if you choose iso as the target (Shrink can't handle HD format anyway) and yes you can burn with a SONY 840A dvd DL burner.

I do think that your machine may not be up to the task though. It seems pretty low specs.

There is no magic bullet when it comes to processing power. For best results, you will want a fast (non-laptop) quad-core processor with a high bus speed and memory speed that is as close to the bus speed as possible. This is the trap that many people fall into. The PC maker advertises a really fast processor but pairs it with a slow bus speed motherboard and slow memory because they are cheap. Until you buy something new, you may just want to be prepared to let it your current machine run overnight.

Be sure to get a 64 bit OS or you'll waste a bunch of RAM.

It does not specify the RAM speed. I would think that you need DDR3 for that bus speed but haven't looked at it in a while. It is odd that the hard drive speed is only 5400rpm. Is this a laptop?

No...it's a Gateway Desktop with AMD Phenom™ II X4 805 ( 805 is no longer being offered by AMD) Quad-Core Processor Model: DX4300-11 ........after looking at some reviews I'm starting to like the HP Pavilion p6230y Desktop PC which has the 810 processor. What do you think ??

                          Thanks

                              New computer

Ok, After your help, I researched some machines and chose this new computer listed below, brought a new blu-ray disc to try it out... "The Hangover" (funniest movie of the decade) but when I put it in the computer (Blu-ray to Blu-ray) to b/u, it simply didn't recognize it, no error messages nothing, just sat there...tried a regular DVD it worked fine. I tried looking thru the forums for help but I couldn't find anything. Do I need a blu-ray reader for the machine.

                              Thanks again
