Excessive Burn Time

My frustration meter is just about pegged. As a new user of the DVD Fab trial version, I just can’t seem to figure this out. The tutorial does not address Blu-ray to Blu-ray and is totally useless.

Fifteen hours and ten minutes to copy a disk to my hard drive! Are you kidding me? What happened to the advertised “very fast copying speed?”

I am operating Windows XP and have a Pioneer BD-205 drive; I am using Memorex BD-R 4x-25gb single layer disks. My attempts to backup my Blu-ray Spiderman 3 have been a mess. Either I am not getting it or this is the worst software program ever perpetrated upon mankind.

On my first attempt I tried a full-disk copy. The program told me there was not enough room on the single-layer disk I was using and to insert a double-layer disk. Instead, I then selected the Main Movie option. It advised the copying process had started and that compression was not necessary. Copying the files to the hard drive seemed to work fine. Burning the files to disk, however, was a comedy of errors. After 2 hours, the program announced the burn had been completed successfully. Imagine my surprise to find the disk was completely blank.

I then downloaded ImgBurn as an alternative. The preview showed just fine, indicating the files on the hard drive were OK. When I attempted to start the burn, however, the program advised the files were too big for the available space. But didn't DVD Fab just say no compression was necessary? So why wouldn't it fit? I went ahead anyway and sacrificed the disk to see if it would burn at all. It did. Excellent quality picture . . . just not the whole movie.

ImgBurn apparently does not compress anything so the key is to get DVD Fab to work properly. I erased everything and started over. There is a block at the lower left of the screen which was set for BD-50. I reasoned this must refer to the recording medium so I changed it to BD-25. The burn to hard drive was incredibly slow. I let it run overnight just to see how long it would take. Next morning it was still churning away, finally completing the process after 15:10. Totally unacceptable.

This time the ImgBurn process went well – I had a complete movie! But 15 hours 10 minutes? What am I doing wrong?

Nothing wrong as you just might have a slow computer and that is the normal time for a slow computer. Maybe post the computer specs and someone could tell you if that is a reasonable time for the computer. Another thing you could do is try resetting the DMA to see if that helps with the time

Thanks AGJ. Checked my DMA settings. The primary is already set for DMA, Ultra DMA Mode 2. Problem. Device manager doesn't show a secondary IDE channel. How can that be?

What processor are you running? Quad core is the way to go for compression. Anything less and this is your issue.

[Complication]

The process was slow because of the CPU time to compress to BD25. Your drive settings are probably fine. You can test this by ripping to BD50 and select the hard drive as the destination. It should take under an hour for a full BD.

You can then use the hard drive copy as the source to create the BD25 which will still take 12+ hours unless you have a very new and fast PC. Things like quad cores, I7, large amount of RAM, and supported GPU would cut that time considerably. The amount of information on a full BD is rather large and cutting it down to size takes a lot of CPU horsepower and time.
