Blue Ray on PS3

Ok folks,

I have two questions in regards to playing blue ray format using my PS3. Can I play my blue ray back up movies from an external hard drive using my PS3? I understand I can file transfer regular DVD back up to my PS3 but will it transfer them in a Blue ray format?
