Why CPU Core are all below 10%

    Hi,
I am backing up the blu-ray disks of the documentary "LIFE" and I noticed that the CPU (Q9550) load is very low during re-encoding. Is it because of the GPU (ati 5850) or there is something wrong.

I backed up the blu-ray on my hard drive with no compression as an ISO and now I want to compress it to fit on a 25GB BD.

The first two time with version 7.0.7.5 it crashed and now I am trying version 7.0.7.8 and it did not crash yet but the processor load is so low that I am wondering if it is normal.

    Thanks

I suggest you provide/attach the log files from DVDFab. The Help Us Help You thread has details on how to do this.

Offhand, the GPU may be taking much of the processing load and/or you are hitting a I/O limit.

I have an ATI 5850 as well. Compressing a blu-ray loads all 8 of my CPU threads at 99% for the duration, which is about 2 hours. :-) I don't think the GPU does much of anything. What does your processing rate for DVDFab show? I.E. 3.8Mb/s, etc...I am using an older version, 7.0.6.2 I think.

I'm sure his gpu is taking most of the load but I don't think I've ever seen my processor go that low when compressing. Mine usually takes all of my gpu power and almost all of my cpu power and goes about 6 to 6.5 MB/s, taking about an hour and a half.

An ATI 5850? Would that be with CoreAVC added on? If so, I might have to buy that bacause from what I can monitor on my GPU it isn't doing anything during encoding with software only. (CUDA isn't supported) It would be nice to throw it's weight into the mix someday for sure.

There's the Log File and screen captures

The CPU load on all cores is between 25-40% for the first 21 minutes but go down to 1-5% and then 0%. Then I paused the process and click cancel and the program does not respond. I suspect that the program crashes and that is the reason why the re-encoding bit rate is so low and the task time left became went from 27 hours to zero.

There is something wrong with re-encoding.

            Thanks for your inputs.

I finally found the reason why DVDFab was always stopping at a certain step.

It is a DXVA issue with ATI 5850 Card with Catalyst 10.6. When using Software decoding everything is fine.

Interesting. I'm still using 10.4. Guess I'll stick with them for awhile.
