Failed to Write (Pretty Woman USA)

    Greetings,

I have been using DVDfab with great results on virtually everything I have thrown at it until stepping into the Blu-Ray realm. I have yet to purchase a blu-ray burner, so I am currently compressing my blu-rays to DVD+R DL or DVD-R depending on the movie and the room it is going into (I am using cheapo DVD5 media for backups that are likely to get destroyed, and DVD9 for those that will be better taken care of, among other reasons...)

Now that I have bored you with all that, recently I have tried to back up Pretty Woman onto a DVD5 disc but DVDfab errors out, saying failed to write (sorry, I didn't keep the exact message). Looking at the log, it seems that DVDfab is complaining that the disc size is not large enough, acting as though I have selected a BD output and not DVD5 720p. 2 Logs follows, on with an attempt to burn on my Lite-On DVD burner, and one with an attempt on my Samsung BD Reader/DVD Burner:

As you will note, I upgraded to the beta version to see if it was a version compatibility issue with no luck. I am certain that I am selecting BD5 720p as my output, and have attempted this backup start to finish 3 times, going through the process of selecting BD5 720p in the dropdown menu each time.

I do know that I am using cheap media for this particular burn, but I have had 0 problems with this media with DVDfab and my drives. I have successfully backed up both other BD to BD5 720p on this media, as well as had no problems backing up dvd to dvd.

Any advice as to what is going on? I do have another problem BD backup, Braveheart, which completely stalls on the ripping phase - it says it is ripping but the BD-ROM access light never blinks to indicate read and the drive eventually spins down, though DVDfab does not error out.

Well if you could post all the available DVDFab logs, that would help. There are a couple more. Also, right click on the ripped folder and tell us how big it is. Are you letting DVDFab rip and compress at the same time? I always rip first to lets say my D: drive, wait for it to get done, then select the ripped folder and compress to a different drive, also taking out the main movie.

Unfortunately, I have deleted my previous logs without thinking about it after deciding to do a clean install of the program. I backed-up 2 DVDs to make sure everything is in working order and I am now letting the it work on the BD again. You are right in assuming that I am allowing the machine to rip and compress at the same time as I have had success using that method, but if this attempt fails than I will try a two step process and let you know how it goes; however, I have a sneaking suspicion, that I might have stumbled onto the problem...

Can someone tell me if PCM 5.1 audio can be compressed? Through research tonight, I have learned that it is a lossless, uncompressed format that essentially doesn't require decoding, and I have noticed that both movies that I attempted this with and had this error (excluding Braveheart - different issue) both have PCM 5.1 tracks. If these lossless tracks cannot be compressed, perhaps the solution is to remove these tracks from the rip?

For anyone more experienced than me, does this sound reasonable? I am currently playing off this assumption and have removed the PCM track. I will post results later when I get a definitive answer, though like an idiot I have not troubleshot one step at a time, doing both the clean install and the removal of the PCM 5.1 track at the same time. Perhaps if this backup is successful I will try another rip and burn with the PCM track reslected to see if it fails.

      Thanks you for your response.

Indeed it was an issue with the PCM 5.1 stream - lesson learned. Hopefully this thread helps someone else if they run into this issue.

Thank you for your assistance Racem22.

Looks like you are using the VSO burning engine...is that correct? I could never get that one working on my system. Switch to ImgBurn and enjoy.

Yes I am using the built in VSO burning engine and have not experienced any problems with it until the PCM 5.1 issue. I do have imgburn installed on my system, however, and I probably will change the DVDfab settings to take advantage of it.

            Thanks for the suggestion.
