Basic BluRay Ripping Questions

I've been using DVDFab for a number of years, mainly to back up my DVD collection. I recently have started doing the same for my Blu Ray discs. I've got some basic questions that relate to the ripping process. I am ripping Main Movie to an ISO.

Audio Type - Is there any reason to include the 3/2 audio setting? Or should I just check the Dolby DTS 5.1 setting?

Title Selection - I've read some threads related to this and I believe what I've learned is that if there are multiple options that appear to be the Main Movie (i.e., some have 1 or 2 chapters so I assume those are not correct). For instance, I was trying to rip Funny People last night, and DVDFab defaulted to the second option on the list, but it only had 2 chapters. The first and third options included 21 chapters, but the third had a little variance on the time of the movie from the first two options. I went ahead with the first option (I haven't been able to test, see below). I've also read some people say that you can test which file to use by playing the movie on a BR player, however, as long as this is taking me, I'm looking for the most simplistic process.

The first time, DVDFab crashed and asked if I wanted to send an error report to dvdfab. I declined, chalking it up to an aberration. That didn't change the scan time, and I finally cancelled again thinking that I would check with the forum to see if I am doing something wrong.

I only keep either DTS (which I downmix from DTSHD-MA) or Dolby 5.1. Don't bother with the old stereo track.

Sometimes this will be an extended and theatrical version, sometimes I cannot see exactly why there are multiple tracks of the same length. Look at the audio tracks associated to giev you a hint which one to choose. If one has DTS, Dolby, and a few stereo tracks and the other only has one audio track then the former is probably the right one. If they are the same it probably does not matter which one you rip.

Not too sure on the 3rd one, I have never had such a problem although it may pay to check whether your devices are in fact running in DMA mode. Go to control panel/system/device manager and look at properties of your ATA controllers and see if they have "PIO mode only" or "UDMA if available" selected. You want the latter.

A number of the Blu-discs I've encoded have what appear to be multiple copies of the main movie listed. When the running time of those copies are identical, sometimes the other version(s) are alternate "views" or "angles" of the film. However they can also, often, be different language versions of the same film; all on-screen printing appears in a particular language, one English, another French, another Spanish, etc. These versions may still have English language audio tracks, so they cannot be spotted using that method.

For example: Disney/Pixar's UP has 3 versions of the film (if memory serves). The default choice on my DVDFab installation resulted in all on-screen text (the movie title in the sky at the beginning, Ellie's "My Adventure Book" and the end-credits) appearing in French, despite the spoken language being English.

Using the preview window, I located the version of the film that had English language credits at the end and encoded that version...the title (in the sky at the beginning) and the book title also appeared in English in that version.

I also recently learned that the preview pane can be enlarged by double clicking it (and felt dumb for not trying that on my own). Enlarging it makes the end-credits far easier to read. Heh.

In addition to trying the PIO/UDMA settings, what version of FAB are you using?

v7.0.9.0 (and later) was advertised to drastically cut the scanning time for BD. It definitely did on my rig. My current wait for most BDs is less than 30 seconds.

wapitikev, I am using v 7.0.9 and i saw that it is supposed to sppeed up this process and thats why i'm so confused. i took your suggestion to go to the device manager but i can't find anything specific to the PIO/UDMA settings. i clicked on the closest thing i could find under Device Manager, which was IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, but didnt see any reference to pio or udma. What am i missing?

You can also check your drives mode by going into device manager IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers click IDE controllers advanced settings and check for DMA, if they are IDE, but make sure you check both of your IDE channels.
For Sata in the same folder IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers Serial ATA controllers click the port that has your drive on it, and also check your DMA status.

If you suspect your drive is in PIO mode your logs should tell us The default location is:C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\DVDFab\Log.
Please just copy and paste the most recent burn log(s) and post right here.

You can also reset DMA in Fab by
Open Fab Click the Green √ top right > General > make sure Check for DMA Automatically is Checked and also Click the Reset DMA to the right and restart.

You'll only be able to get at DMA choices if you are using IDE (non-sata) DVD/Blu players/burners. If your Blu-disc player/burner is SATA then you can ignore what I'm about to type.

If you have any IDE devices you would find settings on the Advanced Settings tab under Primary IDE Channel or Secondary IDE Channel in the Device Manager.

In XP, you would want the Transfer Mode section to say "DMA if available" for the Blu ray reader/burner instead of "PIO only" (for Device 0 or Device 1...whatever your player/burner is)

In Windows 7 you still have the Primary IDE Channel or Secondary IDE Channel listed, but under the Advanced Settings tab you'll see the Devices 0 and 1 listed under Target ID. Across from each device it will say what mode it is currently using (level Ultra DMA 2 is typical for DVD/CD drives). Down below, there will be a check-box that says "Enable DMA". Make sure it is checked.

Make sure to post your burn log, like CBR929 asks for.

Sorry, hit return on above before i was done. is this the log that you need (including below). btw, i did try and reset the DMA the last time but it didnt change anything. The scanning took neay an hr last night.

Also, im still having trouble finding any dma options in the device manager. perhaps thats because im running a sata drive as wapitkev noted?

Please download and try the latest beta you will find it here

Remember instead of clicking run click save then open the folder and right click and install the programs as administrator.

Also your drive has a firmware update please visit your PC manufacture site and download and install the most current driver. Or you may get it here

Rob, it looks from your first post that at least one of your drives is IDE.

What version of Windows are you using? I'll try to give you the shortest, exact method to identify the DMA settings location.

Ok.

press the "windowslogo" key and the "pause/break" key...this will bring up the System window.

On the left at the top of the list is Device Manager. Click that.

On the device tree, doubleclick the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" branch.

Double click on "ATA Channel 0."

Click on the "Advanced Settings" tab.

In the Devices section, under the "Device Type" column you are looking for an entry that says something other than "ATA DISK" ...it will most likely say "ATAPI...."

For example, on one of my Windows 7 boxes I have a CD burner on the primary IDE channel (IDE channel 0) as slave (which shows on the Advanced Settings tab as Target ID 1). The Device Type for that row says ATAPI CD ROM and the Current Mode column lists it as operating on "Ultra DMA Mode 2"

If you do not see anything on that Advanced Settings tab other than ATA DISK, then click Cancel to close that window and then doubleclick "ATA Channel 1", then click on that Advanced Settings tab and look at the devices listed.

Any ATA Channel (0 or 1) that has an IDE device on it will have a check-box available in the bottom area of the Advanced Settings tab that says "Enable DMA"

Make sure that the ATA Channel with your BluDisc player/burner has a check-mark in that option-box.

Then Click OK to save any changes and then x-out of all the other windows.

Let me know how you make out.

Guys, thanks so much for the detailed suggestions. I'm sorry it took me a couple of days to get back, but I was traveling. CBR929, I've updated my driver and installed the beta. The bad news is I'm still stumped with the Device Manager. When I double click on the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" branch, I get a subbranch that says "Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller". When I double click on that, I don't see any reference of "ATA Channel 0". Rather, I get the Properties of the Intel Controller with four tabs: "General", Driver, Details, and Resources.

Interestingly, I did a search for "ATA" within the help menu of the Device Manager, and it brought me through the same initial steps as you outlined. However it had a note that said, "The Advanced Settings tab might not appear for all IDE controller devices." Unfortunately it doesn't explain why that would be.

Any other idea as to how to check the DMA?

In the meantime, I am going to see if the driver update fixed the scanning issue. Cross my fingers!

Alright, now that's more like it. Scan took 10 minutes. I should add that I was backing up a different BR than last time, but this was noticeably faster than any previous scans I've done. I'll test with Funny People next, just to make sure it wasn't that particular BR. But it looks like I'm in business. Btw, I reset my DMA before I scanned, just to make sure. I had done it previously, but I didn't know if I should do it again after updating the driver.

Do either of you think I should still check on the DMA settings for my drive, i.e, through the Device Manager? Or should I leave well enough alone?
