Please help :))) newbie :)) having problems

To Whom It May Concern :

First and foremost I am a newbie to the process of backing up personally owened Blu - Ray discs. That being said please ignore my ignorance and/or any information that I accidently leave out. I recently purchased an LG Blu-Ray disc internal disc drive (Model # BH10LS30) My computer is an HP with the following specs. Windows Vista. Intel Quad 2 Processor @2.66 GHz and 6.00 GB Ram. I am using DVDFab to compress the blu-rays to a 25gb disc and then using IMGburn to write the file onto a disc. I have three questions that I hope can be answered.

    1. I have made back up of two blu ray movies (From Paris With Love, Get Him to the Greek) and during playback both movies freeze at certain points and automatically fast forward one-three minutes. Is this normal for the movies to skip?

    2. What are the proper settings that I should be using with both programs to provide optimal performance?

    3. What is the difference between software and cuda under decoder/encoder settings? Where should they be at?

My main focus is to ensure quality back ups that have flawless playback without any skipping. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Once again I do apologize if I am leaving anything out but if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you and have a great day

Hello and welcome to the forum. First off, please post your DVDFab logfiles as directed in the "Help Us Help You" sticky so we can narrow down what's wrong.
For question #1, no that is not normal for them to skip ahead, there's definitely something wrong.
For question #2, no settings should be causing what you're experiencing, but on a side note, don't rip and compress(if that's what you're doing) the movie at the same time, as it will wear out your burner and take a lot longer among other issues.
For question #3, CUDA is the GPU acceleration that is used on most newer NVIDIA graphics cards. Please tell us what model you have and we'll be able to tell you if it has CUDA support. And try your backups with CUDA disabled and enabled to see if that fixes the issues. Also, make sure your graphics card drivers are up to date.

Thank you so much for your timely responce.

For your responce to question 2 you mentioned not to rip and compress at the same time. Can you please go into detail on how I should do it because I am unsure.

Also my graphichs card is Nvidia GEForce 9500GS. I looked it up under Device Manager > Display Adapter. Is that correct?

BTW I just updated my Graphics card from NVIDIAs website. Hopefully it helps. Still not sure if its CUDA enabled so if you can please let me know it would greatly be appreciated.

P.S How does updating the graphics card help the skipping when playing back on a personal blu ray player hooked up to a tv? Sorry again for my ignorance with the subject. Thank you

Basically what I mean is, if you're compressing your blu rays, is rip the whole disc to your hard drive, keeping the selection on BD50 so it won't compress it and don't uncheck anything, leave it the way the disc is made. After its done ripping, which will take from half an hour to an hour, then go and select full disk or main movie, whatever you prefer, select the folder that was ripped instead of the disc, and select the output to be what you want, BD25, BD9, BD5, etc. And uncheck whatever you don't want to keep. Extra audio, extra subtitles, etc. It is also beneficial to select a different internal hard drive as the target as this will speed up compression times. For your graphics card, I believe it supports CUDA so play around with the A/V codec settings and see if you can get the skipping to go away.

What are the a/v codec settings that you recommend. Thank you

Agree with the always excellent advice from Racem22 and as suggested, your
9500GS should support CUDA and Fab should as well.
Unsure of the exact specs since we don't know the card manufacturer, but if you enter Common Settings > A/V Codec,
note Codec Information as displayed by Fab and there's your answer.

I think your best, initial settings are as follows:

Name:	nVidia.jpg
Views:	4
Size:	57.6 KB
ID:	303496

If this doesn't work out for you or after tinkering with them a bit, problems persist, then change all the settings to software for both the Video Decoder and Video Encoder and see if this improves your output.

Just an FYI re: some free uitlities.

Thnak you for all of your advice and timely responces. It is greatly appreciated and does not go unnoticed. I took all of your suggestions and I am still encountering many occurences of either freezing/skipping during playback. This has happend on 4/5 Blu-Ray discs I have backed up. The exact thing that happens is that the Blu-Ray plays, at one point will freeze, and then skip ahead a minute or two. Sometimes when skipping ahead the audio doesnt sync with the lips. Do you think it is an error from the reading process or the writing?

What I am now doing is buring an ISO image directly to the harddrive then using that as a source to later compress it to a BD25 and finally using IMGBurn to write it.

Thank you and have a great day

I meant to confirm with you...
Do the ripped files playback ok when viewed from the hdd with a software player?
Maybe you said and I missed it?

I suspect this is a media/burn issue, but need confirmation as above

Also could it be the disc I am using? I am using the kodak bd-r printable discs.

Sorry, I'm at work and jumping on & off as I'm able...
It sure could be the media...write speed, etc., etc.,
Please post your logs, particularly the burn log.
Just copy & paste a couple of 'em and this will help nail down the problem(s)

                        The default location is:

                        For Win7
                        C:\Users\User Name\My Documents\DVDFab\Log
                        or for XP
                        C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\DVDFab\Log

When viewing the files...don't open individual files.
Just open the folder or directory with the dropdown toolbar on the player.
Media Player Classic is excellent, but I don't think it will open .ISO
Also VLC is an excellent player and will play .ISO files

                        Both are free

cc. I'm pretty sure your problem is in burning, not in conversion. To fix it, please check writing speed for your media and set ImgBurn for half of it. In general, it's a good practice to set your burning speed to a half on nominal. If you don't know how to do it, please visit this link and go through tutorial: http://forum.dvdfab.com/showthread.php?t=12

Also under the settings > Blu Ray Copy should the Enable full scan tab be checked? Also what should be the ecoding setting Fast or Slow speed? Does this have any relevance to my issue. Thank you again for your timely responces and concern
