Avatar Extended (still) Out of synch

    Hi guys.

[Please carry over with me. I'm a newbie to BlueRay]

Well, this little movie is giving me a headache: When ripping "Avatar extended edition" from BlueRay to DVD the sound drifts more and more out of sync.

Searching on the internet gives - among other things - hit to this thread at this forum:

where Spiker has the same problem.

I followed the advice, and got to change the drift from approx. 1 second in the end of the movie to - what I can estimate - 1/3 of a second.
    It's better, but annoying anyway.

Another answer in an other forum (not about DVDFab) said the solution was to change FPS from 23.976 to 23.975.
When calculating it out it seem allright: The movie will be ahead of the sound about 10 frames, which is 2/5 of a second. But the question is: Where do you change that? I can't see this anywhere in the menus?

Another thing, just out of curiosity: I.e. "A bugs life" do not have the same problem. Why is "Avatar" different on this point?

    Sincerely/Best regards
    Perro

      More information.

      Hello again.

Sorry about the lack of info, I'm a newbie to this forum too.

Now, during the rip, there was no pop-ups whatsoever. I am ripping the original disk, and as far as I could see there was no warnings or errors.

      I use DVDFab 8.0.9.7 Beta.
As recommended in the thread I am referring to, I have set "Software" on the Video Decoder and the Video Encoder.

No other software runs at the same time.
My system is Win7, 32 bit.

This is until now the only movie this happens to. But my experience until now only counts "Avatar extended edition" and "A bugs life".

      The logfile looks like this:

        Hi Perro,
I am a newb too with Bluray and this part of the DVDFAB software, but I had some glitches and coasters and have been successful. I may be able to help.

Yes it is. I thought of this one too, I don't care how long time it takes to rip, I just want a good result.

            Hi Perro
Are you converting and compressing straight from your drive?

If so, please do not compress from your drive
First save it to your HDD as BD50 "Movie Only" without compression.
Then open the hard drive folder and select DVD5 or DVD9 to compress to another folder on your hard drive.
Use the "Write Data" mode of Fab to open this COMPRESSED folder and burn to a disk.
Doing it this way saves wear and tear on your optical drive and is also faster.

You can also view this final compressed folder and check for A/V sync issues before burning to disc.
            Hope this helps

              Done! Problem persists.

              Hello again.

Now I have done what you suggested:
"First save it to your HDD as BD50 "Movie Only" without compression."
This works fine. There is no sliding in the sound, as I can see using the VLC afterwards.

"Then open the hard drive folder and select DVD5 or DVD9 to compress to another folder on your hard drive."
This is done too. But now the sound is sliding these one third of a second like before.

I've chosen "Software" on all options in A/V Codec, and the "Enable lightning recording when..." is not checked.

I don't burn to DVD's. I have a computer standing next to my TV, and watch the movies directly from my HD. This is why I rip them at all. I have very bad experiences from DVD and CD's, and harddisks is the most reliable IMO.

I am very tempted to try to modify in the file called "bd_dvd.vob.xml" where is says "23.976" and alter it to "23.975", but I'm afraid I will not be able to determine wether DVDFab actually uses this file or not.
The rip takes about three hours, so its is not just to do and see what happens.

Done! Problem persists. Now with modification of profile.

                I tried it out.

In the file called "bd_dvd.vob.xml" i changed "23.976" to "23.975".
                No change.

But: In DVDFAB i could check "Specified in profile" under "DVD / Blu-ray Ripper", "Default framerate".

When saying "OK" to this, and opening the "Common Settings" again, this was changed back to "Same as source".

So, maybe DVDFab has not used the profile-file(?)

                  Hi Perro
Download BDinfo and scan the rip on your HDD and check the frame-rate of the file, then chose that frame-rate.

                    Done. Bitrate 23.976

                    Hello again.

Done. It says loud and clearly 23.976 fps.

Well, so much for the 23.975 fps-theory...

But why does the sound drift then? And what is the solution?
