Ok, sounds like a driver conflict or perhaps corrupt/missing.

Are you able to use your drive outside of Fab?

Not sure what os you're using, but it must be XP or later.
Please enter device manager and uninstall your dvd drive from your pc.
Reboot your pc and windows will reinstall it and assign appropriate drivers.

Hopefully, Fab should be able to "see" your Source now.

There's also a registry patch available to fix this if necessary.
I'm at work right now and don't have my pc handy, but if you need the patch, just ask and and I'll locate it and post it
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

          Hey Marion,

          Yup...should be something like...Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager.
As long as it's just your dvd drive that your uninstalling, you really can't do any harm...just reboot.

It'd be easier to see via screenshots, but I can't post any here at work and it's pretty busy today.

I can post some screenshots with instructions late tonight/tomorrow.
In the interim, someone else might pop in a give you some guidance.

              Hi again Marion,

I just re-read your thread...it all was pretty fragmented in this old brain....

Whoa, you just bought this pc?
What kind of trouble....something apart from Fab?
Let's go over some stuff, take it slow and easy and make as few changes as possible.

Is this an HP? Please post make and model
I'm pretty sure I found your burner specs, but I want to be certain.

Are you able to see your burner in windows explorer?

Are you able to play a dvd, known to be playable?

Is this the same pc that you had when you started the thread and had a successful burn with Fab?

Have you installed any other software, particularly burn software like Nero InCD or similar?

I think the simplest and best place to start is with my good friend's advice, CBR929, back on post #19.
Download and install Img burn engine.

This may well avert any driver conflict and Img is a much more reliable and versatile burn engine than VSO (Fab's default burn engine). It's free too.
In addition, it will help us troubleshoot upper and lower filters if necessary, which may be causing you problems.

Unfortunately, the video tutorial is no longer available, but it's pretty simple, so here goes:

              Download link:
              http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Download, save to hdd, close, right click on installer and from the dropdown, click run as administrator

              Open Fab, enter Common Settings

Size:	67.8 KB
ID:	304725

              Now follow the screenshots 1, 2 & 3.

              1) Click Write
              2) Select Img from the dropdown
              3) Select Recommended for the Write speed from the dropdown

For the time being, you can just use my settings for anything else.
The Writable Media (DVD-5) Size may be a bit to high for your Ritek brand, so you may want to lower this to the low default of 4300 MB just to be safe, but I think you'll be ok.
As CR929 suggested, you can also tick Set Booktype to DVD-ROM (Only for DVD+R/RW media)
(I have my burners set up to booktype via firmware, so it's independent of any software)

Also, you'll want to set up the Automatic Write Speed (AWS) option in Img.
(This will retain the media ID, burner and burn speed settings).

Here is the AWS set up from a previous post:

              1) Insert your blank dvd media
              2) Click Write Mode from the EZ-Mode Picker
              3) Select AWS as your Write Speed
              4) Click Change Automatic Write Speed
              5) Select the desired Write Speed
              6) Click Add
              7) Set the AWS for each brand/mid of blank media you will use. You may also select different write speeds for multiple burning drives.
              8) Click OK

Here's a tutorial on AWS from LUK!, the author of Img.
Hello and welcome to another of my legendary guides *cough* In this one I'll be explaining how to use the new 'Automatic Write Speed' feature found in versions 2.2.0.0 onwards. For those of you that don't know, the 'Automatic Write Speed' feature basically lets you configure a set of predefined w...

Gotta run, but I'll catch you later (hopefully before bedtime on your side of the pond...

fIRST OF ALL A VERY HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR !!!!

2ndly a big thank you for this long and good explanation Maineman....

Yes, i got my new pc in the 30th december late in the day,so ...HP HPE 420 it is. 6GB and 1.5 TB HDD. It was pretty expensive but i thought i would get one for that price that finally works for me. Ive had so much trouble with all the earlier Pc's. But they all have different trouble so i cant believe its me doing everything wrong that makes them have all these troubles.....

Anyway, the one that had the dvdfab burningproblems was a 2year old hp pav elite that worked fine except for some programs that suddenly wouldnt work right anymore. I have a hp pav el. 32 bit as well, that one i cant ise because it will not work anymore whenever it had an update from windows...it just wont start than. And more smaller problems i wont tire you with now.
The dvdfabcomputer..lets call it, that worked fine suddenly had my plugins for photoshop and paintshop not working anymore. I tried reinstalling them after removing them, but they didnt want to install again!!
Now this new machine doesnt install any plugins at all!!!!!! Really, im going stark raving mad!

I see Windows dvd burner no nero or other, although a window of Cyberlink came out of the blue yesterday, isnt that a burning thing as well?

I installed photoshop so i can play a dvd.

I have Clone CD installed as well.

I am going to follow your instructions, but not right now, i need to get the progamms i work with working first on this new machine and maybe have some funtime doing stuff that works instead of only trying to solve problemswhich i seem to be doing since a started computing 3 years ago.....
And as long as clone cd works its fine for now.

However, when i get to dvdfab again and followed your steps i will get back to you, wheter it works or not, is that ok with you?

I hope you have a nice newyearsday and thanks again for all your help!
                Marion

Okey dokey and happy new year to you.

Oh and I almost forgot. Even though your pc is new, it already has problems.
                  Recommend you do some housecleaning.
                  Please download, install and run

It's free (you can donate if you choose) and is an excellent utlility for maintenace and cleanup.
Run the Windows cleaner (also tick Old Prefetch data), Application cleaner and the Registry scan and fix
The app will ask you to backup the registry prior to "fixing"...please be sure to do this.

This is a great little app to run on a regular basis for the general health and well-being of your pc.
Also the other utilities by Piriform are highly recommended...Defraggler, Speccy and Recuva.

                    Hi again,

Is ccleaner not something that can get me in trouble cause if there is the slightest chance it can you may be sure it will do that to me.

Make a backup before using it, mmmmm sorry for my stupitdity, what exactly do i back up there, all my files i am just now copying to this machine from the other one? And do i have to do that everytime i use ccleaner, cause if you should use it regularly thats a lot of wotk isnt it?

I would expect a new pc to be as clean as a whistle....

No, he's just talking about backing up the registry, not all your files and such, and CCleaner will ask you if you want to back up the registry items you're about to delete or not, so choose to back them up just in case. It's a simple process and only takes a couple seconds, that way if something goes wrong you can restore it.

                          Hi marion
                          You will click Yes
CCleaner is a great program for cleaning a computer of old and unused files that were deleted, but still have remnants on the hard drive, and also when programs update to newer version there is always leftover pieces that never get uninstalled and CCleaner cleans the hard drive of all leftover junk.

While there are always risks with anything....your hdd can crash and burn the next time you start it up...
I have never known anyone to have an issue with CCleaner Registry scan/fix.

Regardless, the regfiles (to be fixed) are backed up prior to any "fix"
For Win 7, you'll find them in
                              C:/ Users/User Name/My Documents

                              To restore:
Right-click on the .REG file created and select 'Merge'.

It's a good idea not to manually edit the registry if you're not sure what you're doing...
that's another reason this is so useful.

Be sure to run the Windows (include Old Prefetch data) and Application Sweeps as previously suggested.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
