Just to add to CBR929's advice...
When you check the DMA status on the appropriate IDE ATA/ATAPI controller, it's not sufficient to see DMA if available, it actually has to be in UDMA mode.
Another method is to uninstall the burner.
XP will reinstall and assign appropriate drivers on the next reboot.
You can also power off, physically unplug your burner, power on, power off and replug the burner and then power up
Finally,you can also run a registry patch, which is very effective.
