I have no idea as to your motherboard specs and system configuration.
First off, your (? Hitachi) DVDRAM GH41N is configured as an IDE/ATAPI device.
Perhaps your BIOS is very limited as to user settings...you may have to edit the registry to effect a change.

However, your not using this drive to burn. Is it reading ok?
BTW, no offense, but this drive has an abysmal track record.

As to your BD drive, is this an external burner?
If yes, DMA is not applicable here
Did you add a RAID controller card?

Does the disc from this burn play ok?
You're using MKM 003 media and burning at 4X.
You may achieve better results burning at 8X since this media is rated at 8-10X.
Your burn time is about right for 4X and if I'm guessing right about your burner configuration, DMA is not applicable in any case.

hi maineman, yep your right the blu-ray/dvd burner is an external burner, and no i didn't add a RAID card i just connected the blu-ray burner with an esata cable and pc picked it up (i have no idea what RAID means or does) if you could enlighten me !!! is RAID on a par with DMA ? yes the hitachi drive reads disks ok, my pc is an acer 7811 with 8gb of ram - 1tb harddrive - processor - intel (R) core (TM) i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80 ghz. look forward to your reply. gordon.

LGs sometimes have a riplock that makes them terribly slow to read discs with DVD movie contents. Can be solved by modifying the firmware.

Anyway, from wikipedia

RAID:
"an acronym for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks (formerly Redundant Array of Independent Disks), is a technology that provides increased storage functions and reliability through redundancy. It doesn't sound as if you have an IDE/ATAPI controller at all.
In which case, DMA is a non-issue (not applicable).

I see your burner has both esata and usb connections.
I've never connected a burner to an esata port, although I connect my cloned, system hdd this way quite often.

I wouldn't be concerned about the RAID controller configuration. Your pc is set up this way.
You can boot into your BIOS and look at the config settings... I'm certain you'll see options for SATA and RAID, but frankly, I wouldn't change anything, particularly since everything seems to be working ok.

If you want to experiment and compare performance, try connecting your burner via usb.

Could I ask what your concern is?
Your burn time for DL media at 4X is ok.
You know the saying,
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Like I said, you should be able to ramp up to 6-8X with this media and burner.

USB 2.0 might be to slow for a BD-RE burner, so I'm not sure that will improve speed.

thanks maineman and gummigutta for your help, yeah maineman i wasn't really concerned about the set up of my pc and burner i just thought i would need DMA mode enabled, didn't know you didn't need it with external burners and i dont really use the hitachi internal burner anyway, so if the speeds are ok i'll leave as is, no need to rock the boat as they say. thanks for putting my mind at rest, this forum really is a fountain of knowledge and i'll more than likely be back for more drinks from the fountain!!! thanks again. gordon.

I'm not recommending that the OP go usb, I just suggested it so he could compare performance, etc.,
since it seems he wants to explore a bit.

Besides,
He's burning +R DL discs now
BD burners with usb 2.0 connectivity have been around and work quite well
The OP's LG has Hi-speed usb 3.0 connectivity (4.8 Gbps)...
