Reading/Writing Error

This is incredulous. . . Look, I said I was not as techy as you guys and don't understand what I'm suppose to copy from these logs. I saw dates and figured you wanted to see the most recent stuff to compare, and I included some of the 6.0.6.0. to show that that one wasn't working either anymore. I'll cut and paste the most current then below, including the one I just tried again with the newer version you asked me to download.

GregiBoy, what do you mean you see no attempts to burn and 'what the heck procedure' am I using???? I have done the exact same thing every time for over 100 previous DVDs and never had a problem. I haven't had a lobotomy to my recent recollection, so how could I be doing anything differently all of a sudden. AGAIN, THIS ALL STARTED AFTER I DOWNLOADED 8.0.8.2. with the "Write Data" capabilities.

I have noticed something odd that may or may not ean anything though. I just put in a DVD to watch to BE SURE that my driver was working properly and I noticed that the blue analyzing box of DVDFab came up briefly (never noticed that before), but then disappeared and the movie started up in the Windows Media program. Don't know if there's any significance, but at this point I'm mentioning anything that seems different.

Try this.
Do not open dvdfab.

Place disc in drive and let your media player open and play it.

Close the media player.

Open dvdfab.

There is no "BURN" information in any of your posts so far. Without that information there is no way that we can assist you, and we are not trying to be "TECHY" on you.

My honest advice to you is threefold.
1. Get your friend that recommended Fab to you to spend 15 minutes showing you how it operates.
2. Spend some time going through the tutorials on how to do the task that you want and understanding the terminology.
3. If after that you have no success, come back here with full and meaningful information otherwise the senior members that are here trying to assist you will not be bothered to try.

GregiBoy: I have copied and pasted the information from both the "Burn" and the "Internal" log files as I was instructed to do. If there is another place for me to obtain the "BURN" information you claim is not being posted, then I don't know where to get it from. As to your three recommendations:

1) I take a bit of offense to this because don't you think I have already had my friend take a look at this. She too is baffled as to why this is happening. In fact, she was the one who downloaded the purchased copy. I am operating it correctly, as I have for the past year. Her computer at home is having no problems with the same program that won't work now on my computer. If you think I don't know what I'm doing, here's the steps I usually take:

I put a movie DVD in the DVD/CD Drive (I only have one for both). Usually Windows Media Player starts up first and I X out of it and start up DVDFab and wait for the "Open DVD Source" blue box to do it's thing. When that's done I usually choose "Main Movie" and make sure the Source says E:/[Movie Title] and the Target says C:Users/Betsy/Documents/DVDFab

Under "Copy" Copy DVD to Video is checked off, but nothing is checked off under "Removing." Then I ensure it's set at DVD5, but since that's my default, it usually is, then I click "Start."
Under Processing it usually says:
19:29:20 Analyzing of DVD
19:29:24 Analyzing of DVD Completed Successfully
19:-29:24 Copy Process Started
Copying VTS+01_01_1VOB

Then after 3 or 5 minutes, the box comes up with Reading/Writing Error Control . . . Error while writing! Please choose what to do. Retry or Abort.


Now please tell me from the above what I'm doing wrong.

2) Doing the same thing over and over for over a year with perfect results every time should be tutorial enough. I'm not an idiot.
3) Is this information full and meaningful enough? What else can I possibly add? What other kind of information can I gather that is to date missing? If the seniors don't want to "bother" to try and help me, then with whom do I talk to for a full refund? My only concern now though is that even if I do uninstall the purchased program and just use the Free Edition, I'm still gong to have this problem.

So sorry to have presented such a baffling problem, but please don't insinuate that I don't know what I'm doing with a program I've worked for over a year with no trouble.

In future, please take notice and answer what we are asking. We ane not going to play "20 Questions" every time!!! All senior members and mods here are VOLUNTEERS and donate their time and knowledge free of charge to the betterment of the Fab community which I will assure you is like a brotherhood.

Firstly, to make a copy totally within Fab, which you have just purchased, the source should be the DVD Burner and the target should be the DVD Burner also and it will eject and ask you for the blank when required. Your old procedure is now invalid and obsolete so get over it.

Next, it looks like you are getting read errors while Fab is reading/removing protection from the original. This can be caused by:-

Original Disk damaged/dirty/bad pressing. This is more common than you may think. Please check all of the above. This can also cause the burner to be set into a slow mode by Windoze because of the number of errors exceeded and you will need to "RESET DMA". There are multiple post on how to do this on this forum.

To test whether this is the problem, use multiple commercial disks (not copies) to test and ensure that they are clean & polished & have no scratches.

Next: Newer DVD releases have copy protection schema that utilises bad tracks and sectors on the DVD. To circumvent this, you need to have PathPlayer set to "Always ON". Some older DVD's do require you to turn PathPlayer OFF but the need for this is getting less and less.

Lastly: Your burner could be on it's last legs. The only way to test this is with software that you have that uses it totally separately from Fab.

You should really Disable the Autoplay as it causes problems with DVDFab especially if you have Media Center or Media PLayer set to Autostart when DVD inserted. Like mentioned make sure Pathplayer is set to Always Enabled as from the logs all the movies listed need Pathplayer set to Always Enabled to work or you will get this error message you been getting.

Also like Gregiboy said check the dvd for fingerprints scratches and even the smallest scratch can cause this error you been getting especially since most of those DVDs are older ones that may have scratches on them or fingerprints.

Follow Gregiboy advice and let us know what happens

I tried to answer your's and the others' questions the best I could with my limited knowledge base regarding this software and its terminology. It certainly wasn't my intention for anyone to play "20 Questions," nor for me to have to go through this tedious and exasperating explanation process with you all. I do respect your "brotherhood, but it's been no picnic for me either. When one has been performing the same task for over a year with a 100% success rate, there is a comfort zone of repetition that for me anyway, didn't require updating that "knowledge base," I guess apparently, until now. But isn't that how it usually works?

Then this begs me to ask the question . . . Why didn't someone make this suggestion from the get-go? If such a distinct procedural change in the way this program now works is a fairly recent one, it would seem to me to be a logical first choice to suggest. The tutorial's video by the way, does not say this; it says for Target: "Select the location of the ripped DVD files, or rip DVD as ISO image." This is why I continued what I was doing as I have for over a year. I even asked my friend if she performs this procedure the new way, and she said she does not and it works fine for her, so how can it be invalid and obsolete? She has Windows XP and I Vista Home, so perhaps that may be a reason why, don't know. Also, by doing it this new way then it would appear I won't have a copy on my Hard drive if I should decide to make another copy later on? How then would I accomplish that? It would seem I would have to somehow create a folder to access later, but initially it appears to me that this new method doesn't allow for that.

I have tried everything from older store-bought original movies that I previously had no problems with, to the most current brand new ones. Like I said many times in this thread, I have tried all kinds of things to rectify the problem before coming here, but this particular problem only began AFTER I downloaded the purchased version allowing the "Write Data" privilege on March 12. (I will check into the "Reset DMA" issue for future problems, but for now I don't believe this relates to this immediate one.)

It usually is "Always On." I only disabled it during this ordeal to see if that had any influence, but it did not.

For instance??? You mean doing something other than just playing a movie in for example, Windows Media or RealPlayer or InterVideo? What other software might I have that I could try in order to determine if the burner is going?

Well we'll see. When I get home I'll try the new procedure by leaving both the Source and Target windows set at DVD Burner. If this works, I still would like to know how to keep a copy on my Hard drive indefinitely.

There is an option to not delete temporary files if you have the burner set for destination (so you won't lose the movie on the hard drive). When you set the burner for destination, it still has to rip it to hard drive first, you just don't see it. I don't think that is the issue myself as it doesn't really matter if you set the destination to hard drive or Burner in the overall scheme of things. (In your case, you're not even getting through the rip). Either one will get the job done. I personally do everything manually, ripping to hard drive first and then closing DVDFab and using Imgburn to burn but that's just my personal preference.

You said when you tried that, you got a read/write error along the way and it could not finish the process. Is this correct? Well that's what I USE to do also . . . rip to the hard drive with DVDFab first and then close it and burn the copy with my CyberLink Media Suite. But as I've said, the latter process wasn't working on a recent rip of one disc in a "Two & A Half Men" season, so I thought the problem was with Cyber since my friend was able to rip and copy it with no problems from her computer. That's when she told me I didn't need Cyber, and when I purchased DVD Copy with the Write Data capabilities; and that's also again when the problems began. The joke on me here is that my friend noticed that the disc I had ripped was in DVD9 which was why it wouldn't copy with Cyber. But unfortunately this was after I had already purchased and downloaded the new version which turned out to be all for naught.

If there was anyway I could just go back to what I was doing before, cancel and uninstall this last version with the "Write Data" and just go back to the Free Edition and using my CyberLink for burning and have my money refunded, I think we all would be better off from it, especially me!

Yes this is correct, but as I've said, this happens REGARDLESS whether the disc is a previously already burned disk or a new store-bought one.

I don't know how to burn a movie back to hard drive without using DVDFab or similar program, so I guess the answer to that question is No.

OK, so here's where you're losing me. How do you copy and paste movies, previously burned or otherwise, to a hard drive without using a program like either DVDFab or DVDShrink or Nero, or whatever???????

Just open the DVD in Windows Explorer. Simply right click and copy the VIDEO_TS folder and paste in on your hard drive somewhere. This will only work on a already burned DVD or a DVD that has no copy protection (a burned DVD already has the copy protection taken out).

I am on my way home and will try this, Mike. But I do have one perplexing question . . . my friend is on 8.0.8.3. Why is she still able to rip and burn her DVDs through DVDFab the same old way as well as the new way, meaning, leaving the Target window with the DVD Burner info, versus the DVDFab file in Documents and Settings\BETSY\Documents?????????? If this is obsolete and invalid, why does it still work for her???

It's not obsolete and invalid, I think maybe you misunderstood a bit what was said earlier. Whether you choose to designate a folder for the rip or the DVD burner is only a choice how you want to do it. As I said, either way the rip had to go to hard drive first. Choosing the DVD as target is a little more automatic than choosing a hard drive location and then burning after. The other benefit of what you paid for is that it can compress (the DVD 5 option) on the fly as it rips where the free version can't (you would need a separate program to compress to single layer).

Betsy, the reason that I said that the procedure was "Obsolete & Invalid" was that as Mike stated above, you can do the whole process within Fab without any other steps/intervention and compress to DVD 5 at the same time.

I am now becoming more suspicious of your DVD burner having problems.

Can you try burning a title that you alrady have on your hard disk with Cyberlink?

OK, I'm fastly approaching my last wit's end. Here's what I've been doing the last 2.5 hours.

1) Tried having just the DVD Burner as the Target, same result!

2) Tried copying an unprotected DVD from driver E: to a designated folder, and it worked. Tried making a copy of said folder to a blank back to the E: drive and it worked, but took 45 minutes -- played on computer, but not on my home entertainment DVD player.

3) Tried making a copy of same said folder using CyberLink and it worked, but took 30 minutes. Works on home entertainment DVD player.

4) Went to Microsoft Support site and downloaded and performed a drive check (http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd...problems/en-us). Program found one one problem and claimed to have fixed it. I tried to use DVDFab again to first rip an unprotected DVD and I thought it was going to work . . . after 25 minutes, it stopped again with the same Read/Write Error notice with 1:03 minutes left. So there you have it! I will say that the CyberLink is taking an extraordinarily long time to burn now. What use to take 5 or 6 mins. is now taking 30+ mins. Could this be driver related? And if so, why didn't the Microsoft Support program detect anything more?
