    Error while reading

I received the "Error while reading!" message attempting to back-up Babysitter Wanted (2008). I cleaned the disk and attempted to read from other drives but with the same result. I tried to use DVDFab8.8.8.5 as that worked on a prior occasion when DVDFab8 QT would not read the disk; however, it also returned an "Error while reading!".

The log files are as follows:

    Have you tried disabling PathPlayer?
It's one of the first things to try along with what you've already done.

If the problem persists, you probably will benefit from switching burn engines to Img.
There's a link in my sig for setup

In the future, please start your own thread.
While your problem seems "similar", it's a different title for one and it's not fair to the OP to hijack his/her thread

Post moved to it's own thread.
In the future, please do not hijack other members posts, as your problem is not the same as the OP.

I am sorry for not posting correctly.

Yes, I did try disabling PathPlayer, and DVDFab seemed to read the disc okay in the initial scan; however, I got "Error reading" after I choose to burn the disc. I selected "Ignore all", and the disc read got further than before but was reading very slow. I let it run over night, and this morning it was still trying to finish the read process. I do have imgburn selected as my burn engine, but the disc is not getting past the read portion.

I am currently running VSO inspector on the disc. So far it appears okay at 70+% good with no problem or errors reported.

I just found a post where it was recommended to run VSO Inspector as a means to determine whether the disc is good or not. I am not yet familiar with it and whether there are tolerence levels within the scan results. The scan process has slowed to a near halt at a speed of .02x. Thus far it has reported 93.4% good, 0.1% problem, and 0.1% error. I thought I would post preliminary results in the event that this may be enough to determine whether the disc is unreadable. If so, I hope to eliminate anyone investigating this further.

Perhaps there are tolerence/acceptable levels other than 100% good, so I am not certain whether the results are of value yet. In other words, is any level of "problem" and/or "error" enough to make the disc unreadable, or must it be over a particular level?

If your scan has slowed down that much, it sounds to me as if you didn't open the DVD with Fab before you started the scan.

Both VSO Inspector and Nero Disc Speed require an unprotected disc to scan successfully, so the best method to use is to start Fab, allow it to open the DVD, then run VSO right over Fab and run the scan.

Any read error will stop the ripping process with Fab (unless you set 'ignore all read errors'), and in that case, you'll probably be unhappy with the end result.

As far as I know, the sectors shown in the log are only the start sectors for the error... it's unknown for how long they go on before a readable sector is found.

            Hope this helps a little...

Thanks DC, but I guess I am not technically savvy on all this, so bear with me. I can't get FAB to open the DVD due to the read errors, so I'm confused as to how VSO Inspector will work in this instance. Perhaps DVDFab breaks the protection code in the very beginning, and thus VSO inspector can run even though the disc hasn't been actually opened, or displayed with disc information?

I tried VSO Inspector with and without starting Fab first. I've actually been running VSO inspector over the last two nights and it is still scanning. I'm at 96.1% good; 0.4% problem; and 1.5% error.

Also, I did try "ignore all errors" as a last ditch effort, but Fab still wouldn't get past the copy disc function and attempt to rip the disc.

What, may I ask, might be considered "open" status. If I select "abort" after getting the read error messages and Fab displays disc information, does this mean the disc is in "open" status? If I choose anything else (i.e. retry, ignore, ignore all), the disc will not get to the point of displaying disc information. It gets hung up on the reading process.

When you first put a disc in, you will see a small window open as Fab scans the disk. When that window disappears, and you can look at the 'Info' screen, it is at that point that the disk is open, and can be scanned by VSO or Disc Speed.

I noticed from some of your logs that Fab was opening the disk, but your problems start as soon as you start either the copy or rip of the DVD.

                Don't Start!!

Once you hit that point, then run VSO and do the scan.

P.S. Don't set the program to ignore read errors... you want the disc to open...

P.P.S. Unless you have an exceptionally slow system, the scan shouldn't take more than 15-20 min.

Thanks Darthcopier. I got your point. I had it in the back of my head that an actual "open disc" was only obtained after a successful read of the disk. The point I was trying to get at was that I didn't think DVDFab wasn't technically opening the disc because it couldn't get to (your suggested) open status, unless I intervened and selected "abort". For that reason, I didn't think that was technically achieving "open" status. Since you repeated your post about the window disappearing, etc.; I am to assume that it was in an "open" status. You indicated that, based on the logs, Fab was opening the disc, but my problems started after I began the copy process. The post was about the problems with the read process, so the problem was really BEFORE the copy or rip.

I had posted another note, but it appears, along with other posts, that it fell into one of the mysterious black holes. I've noticed other members post concerns about this problem, and a moderator typically replies with "he doesn't see any other posts". This seems logical because members complained that their post disappeared, so how would it be seen subsequent to someone complaining that it was lost? I have lost about as many posts to the black hole, as I've had published.

I had another post that suggested the disc was bad, which I posted immediately after the post of July 8, and I have concluded that I think the disc I was trying to backup is bad.

You have had a total of two [2] post deleted and both were hijacks of another members thread.

I think I mixed up the DVDFab versions in the last post. I can't view it to confirm, so I will summarize. I have experienced occasions where DVDFab 8.0.8.5 will open a disc without having read error issues, when DVDFab 8.1.0.5 QT has returned errors on the same disc. The disc was left in the drive, and therefore, there wasn't any disc intervention between DVDFab versions.

If you have to, use 8085 to open your problem disk, and then run the VSO scan. The logs you posted show that version opening said disk, and that's all you need for the scan to run and return meaningful results.

Please let us know the result.
