Periodically I will have a successful backup sort of. If I attempt to play the backup with dvd player either on pc or standalone player, the picture is fine but just a high pitch sreech audo. Yet can immediate switch to windows media player and sound is fine.

DVDFab shows files as .mpeg2 for a brief second when backing up those particular dvd's and then switches to showing only expected bup, ifo, vob files. I am lost as to what to do to get sound so it plays on regular dvd player.

This is just happening with occasional dvd's.

Do the original disks display the same characteristics?

It sounds like a non-standard soundtrack issue and can be partly caused by the original authoring. I have found a similar problem on quite a few older music dvd's, especially ones featuring Motown artists.

If you are using "Main Movie" mode, ensure that you select a standard soundtrack like AC3.
