Detecting writable media

Having some troubles with burning to a blank DVD. I'm using TDK double layer DVD+R's. When asked to place the media into the DVD drive I get a message that says "detecting writable media" but it sits there and does nothing at all. I have to quit the job before anything happens. I've tried this on 3 different DVD blanks and no luck. Even tried a DVD-R 4.7G blank to see if that would work but I get the same message. Is there something I'm missing? I believe all my settings are correct with respect to defaulting to double layer DVD9s for copying. Even got my speed set at 8X.

I'm using Windows XP64.

Hi Crispy
Please install ImgBurn as your burn engine, you will find the instructions in the link in my signature.

Remember to set up the AWS in ImgBurn and set your write speed to 1/2 the rated speed of your disc.

Also update your Fab to the latest version found here

Do you also have any other copy software installed?
If so, Please Open ImgBurn > Tools > Filter Driver Load Order and post what is listed.

If still having problems post the new log with the latest version.

I've tried ImgBurn also and it would not decrypt the DVD I was trying to copy so I was left with using Fab.

I'll download the latest version of Fab and see if that helps.

You may also want to consider updating your OS to SP3 from Micro$oft

I installed the latest Fab and ran through a complete DVD copy and came up snake eyes. Same errors as before.

From what I gather there is no SP3 for XP64.

Locking issues are common when SP3 or http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932716 is not installed.

I installed the server service pack and that did the trick. I'm now able to copy DVDs.

This is off the subject a bit but I would have never considered a service pack from XP server to work on XP64. What's the correlation there?

Just a guess here but DVDFab is a 32 bit program and runs in that environment.

SP3 for Windows XP x64 = SP3 for Windows Server 2003, because Windows XP x64 is based on Windows Server 2003 and not on Windows XP 32bits.

Off the subject here, but how would I know when to use a DVD5 vs a DL DVD when copying? Only reason I'm using DVD9 is because I ran properties off the DVD I wanted to copy and the size was upwards of 7 gigs. Would that be the biggest indicator of when and when not to use a specific storage capacity size DVD blank?

You should keep everything on your computer up to date, I do.

I'm guessing when the Fab team does their testing they are using the most up to date firmware,service packs and drivers for their computers.

The one thing they could never do is match all the different kinds of hardware, everyone's computer is different.

I use Main Movie for SL disc an very rarely Full Disc using DL disc
I do not like to go below 85%, that's me, you may never know the difference if you went as far as 70% between the original and the backup.

You can test it for your self by making the output to a folder on your computer and viewing it, to try and notice the difference.

You probably will not see anymore updates for XP from Micro$oft.

Difference = Quality, I do not do extras unless I do Full disc

If you do Main movie DVD5 most movies should compress nicely to fit on your single layer disc.

If you want no compression using Main movie, or Full disc, you would choose DVD9 and use a dual layer disc.

Main Movie is exactly what it says, you get just the movie and no extras.

Full disc you get the movie and all the extras.

Interesting. Guess I should've just done the Main Movie rather than the Full Movie. That may have saved me some money. I'm still having trouble copying some of my DVDs but I have a hunch it has to do with the burner itself rather than the software. I went to copy one yesterday and when I placed the disc into the drive DVDfab hung up. But, so did Explorer and any other software that would try to access the disc. Even after a reboot it was giving me grief. Matter of fact I have my PC boot off of a CD where possible and it hung up when it detected the DVD in the drive as well. I ended up placing a CD in and read it. Then ejected the CD and put in the DVD and it was fine. Just frustrating that it's been a painful experience thus far. It shouldn't be this difficult.
