Backup will play on computer, not DVD player

I'm trying to backup a DVD but for some reason the backup will only play on a computer. I've tried running DVDFab on 2 different computers. And, in case it was something to do with Double Layer, I tried a Single Layer.

I've used DVDFab for a couple of years, and this is the first time anything like this has happened.

Any ideas?

A couple things to try are 1. reset your optical drive to DMA mode, it is currently in PIO only mode (not good). And 2. slow the write speed from max to about half the media's rated speed.

I understand how to slow the write speed (which was set to 'recommended' - I presume that's max.

But I'm not sure I understand about the DMA vs PIO. I don't see a setting for PIO, just a box marked 'Check for DMA automatically'. Is that it? In other words uncheck that box?

I just reread this and the log. Brain fart - sorry - I was thinking you were suggesting PIO Mode. I'm doing the reset. Then I'll see if the result is another coaster.

If that box is checked and it is still in PIO mode you may have to go into device manager and uninstall the drive completely, Windows will pick it up and install it when you reboot or you can try to change it manually if it's not trapped.

Resetting the DMA didn't work. It still shows up as PIO mode after creating another coaster.

To reinstall, do I just use Device Manager to uninstall and then reboot, or do I have to uninstall the driver as well?

Can I see whether the drive is in DMA mode from the Device Manager - details? And can I adjust it if it is wrong? I'm using the other computer that I'm not working on - not sure if that was the one I sent the log file from. Windows just shows it as standard drive. DVDFab has HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GT50N A100 [D] in the log.

Yeah you can change it from the device manager but it is the controller that reverts to PIO mode so you'll have to check it. See attached:







Will the original play in your set top player? Playing in the computer but not the set top is sometimes a result of a different region, PAL v. NTSC.

The original plays fine in the DVD player. I think it was detected as region 1.

I don't see anything like the image you attached, in the device manager. The computer uses Intel Rapid Storage Technology, for their chipset. That's what I see. Both computers use the same thing, which may explain why they both had the problem. There is no setting in the application for DMA on the

What's odd is that I've backed up other DVDs recently without an issue. Both in this series had problems.

I don't know if I did this correctly, but I stopped the Intel Rapid Storage Technology service, then tried to backup again. Another failure. There isn't an option to disable at startup, so I'd have to uninstall to check further.

How is the DMA set for the drive in the Device Manager? perhaps the Intel software would leave it alone?

This is getting out of my league, if you are using Intel rapid storage and your controller is AHCI it should not be in PIO mode

I followed the instructions at http://forum.digital-digest.com/f105/how-check-your-dma-status-reset-if-necessary-61905.html to check that DMA is enabled. This required first completely uninstalling the Intel Rapid Storage software as DMA settings aren't visible there.

DMA is enabled, and running Ultra DMA Mode 6 for the DVD drive, but DVDFab still uses PIO according to the log (and another failed burn).

So it seems that the Intel software isn't the culprit - although it is annoying that it won't show the DMA status.

Is there a way to see what DVDFab is set for without creating a DVD? Not just looking at the log after it has been burned.

PIO mode is not a good thing but may not be the culprit? Try a movie that has worked in the past, it may be something else entirely.

Though I agree with my friend 90312, PIO is not a good thing.

I do not believe that your drive is in PIO mode.
My reason for saying this is that you had an average burn rate of 4.42, if your drive was in PIO mode you would have never have gotten this high.

I am leaning more towards your media try switching to a more reliable media like Verbatim +R DL with the AZO dye on the package.

If you want to try and salvage these disc's, you may have better success using ImgBurn as your burn.

You will find instructions in the link in my signature on setting it up, remember to set up the AWS in ImgBurn and your write speed to 1/2 the rated speed of your disc, which in this case will be 4x.

I changed to IMGBurn. I also changed the GPU settings - both the machines that had problems have dual video hardware and are running ATI/AMD Catalyst.

I now believe that the culprit is the DVD player. I tried DVDs of the same movie that I'd previously created, that worked in the computer but not in the player. They worked in a small TV with a built in player, and a VHS/DVD player - both supposedly lower quality than my main Sony player. But I think the Sony had just been used a lot.

I bought a new player, and this seems to work with the same DVDs.

Media quality is a consideration I'm sure, and I've been a little lax with some purchases recently. But it seems to me that there is something odd with the DVDs I was trying to backup. The fact that other DVD backups were still working points to it being the read side of things, not just the writing. But if DVDFab is trying to recreate errors that it reads, perhaps its both.

Still, I think I'm in good shape now. This has been a learning experience.
