    Problem with burning

    Hi everyone,

    Newbie here!

I have been using DVDFab5 on my IBM desktop for a year now and just love it. I haven't updated it to 6 because I just don't see the need, it works too well.

I bought a new Dell laptop and installed it on that one. The first few times I used it, it worked good, no problems. However, it started "messing up". I put the original in and it worked all the way in the first phase. It ejected the original and asked me to put in the destination disk. I put one in (Memorex DVD-R) and it started out okay. Then about 5 minutes in, it ejected the disk and said, "Failed" and asked me if I wanted to try again. I tried a couple of times doing that, but I have to restart the computer and then start over again to try that.

After that, it may work for a time or two, but, most of the time, it does the same thing. I have trashed about 10 disks as a result. I unistalled FAB and then reinstalled it and it may work a time or two or have the same problem. I compared the "failed" disks and they look like they burn exactly the same distance on the burned side, about a half inch.

Keep in mind that it works perfectly on my OLDER IBM desktop. Both machines run Vista Home Premium.

    Any help would be appreciated!

I had a batch of bad DVD's in which more than half failed in the burn process. These where name brand too. Could be a DVD compatibility issue.

You may want to go to your documents & cut'n'paste the DVDFab Log. Check for the date & make sure it corresponds with the date of your Burn VSO crash.

You could also experiment with several other burn engines. Such as Nero9, ImgBurn2.5 instead of the VSO that comes with Fab. The links are in this Forum. Perhaps a moderator could add them. (not smart enough to do so myself unfortunately..)

    Good luck.

      Hi MarMac2768 and welcome,

      Sorry that you're having trouble.
Based on the info so far, it's really just a shot in the dark as to nailing down specific help.
Please take a look at the sticky by signals...

      Help Us Help You

...for details we need in order to provide help.
Of particular importance, please include burn logs from both the "failed" burns as well as the successful burns.
The file path for these logs is included in the sticky ^.

Your choice of blank media (crappy to ok depending on the MID) is not ideal.
Changing the burn engine is another likely improvement.
      However,

            Logs

Thanks guys! I must tell you that I am not a big "computer guy", I'm 50 and you know how that can be! LOL!!

I found the logs and it is very long. However, I'll copy and paste some of it to show you what it says.

Since I started this on 9-10, I have had 5 of these:

I have used two different types of media, Memorex DVD-R 16X disks and Fujifilm DVD-R 8X disks. I thought maybe it was brand of disks too and that is why I tried two different brands. However, that doesn't seem to be the problem. I also will remind you that I have it on my desktop and it works good on that one with either type of media.

It's not the end of the world if I don't get it working on my new computer, but it is aggravating. Any help is great appreciated! Thanks!

Just a quick relpy...late returning to work.

              You're in PIO mode:

You need to be in DMA mode.
I'll explain later or someone else will.

For starters, click on Reset DMA in Common Settings.

                      Thanks Bean55,

I must, once again, confess to not being a 'puterphile. I went to the site you liked to and will most gladly pay $2.99 to get it to work. However, I've had this same program installed on 2 other machines, the IBM I have now as my primary computer, and an eMachine laptop that I sold the other day when I got this Dell. They both worked fine, so it makes me wonder why it wouldn't work with this one. Could there be that much different in the Dell that the other ones don't have? As for the "administrator", I guess I am the "administrator" since I am the only one that does anything with any of these computers. I am a home user (actually a pastor who uses DVDFab to dub our DVDs of our services to give to shutins) so I don't know how that would affect me.

Thanks for any help. As I said earlier, it is working on the desktop so it's not a life shaking thing. It just makes my life a little easier and that is good!

At work, apologies again for being short.

bean55's advice is spot on as always.
The new VSO engine uses SPTI for the access layer.
We note that you're using Fab 5 which is still running the patin-couffin driver.

You're first steps should be to upgrade to the current Fab 6 version 6.0.7.0
                        released today.

Download Img from the bottom most mirror #8.

Troy512 has an excellent video tutorial (several in fact) for using Fab and Img.

Just because you are the only one using it does not mean you are administrator on Windows Vista

You will need to right click on the icon and make sure you choose to run as Admin

And as maineman says they are Free Ware of course donations are more than welcome in most places and no I do not work for them.Just like the program.

Not running under Admin can also cause the right drivers to not load ( SPTI ) and that is why it may still be running the p couffin.

I use ImgBurn as my main burning engine

                              Thanks guys.

I'm trying to do what Bean55 says to do and view the youtube video and just follow it step by step. I was able to get ImgBurn on there and the problem now is to get it to identify the media under the "Automatic Write Speed" tab. What do I put in there and what if I use a different type of DVD from time to time? I decided to get on my desktop and have my laptop open so I can follow the video a little easier!
