language trouble

two movies that i copied to my hard drive, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Patriot, ended up playing in Spanish and/or French. the Patriot had commentary. using VLC, i can't seem to control anything other than to skip forward. in otherwords, i have no control over play, setup, language, scenes, etc. i am very new at all this. help.
