Copy DVD to HDD for WDTV Live

I have recently purchased a WD my book live for storing my ripped DVD collection on with a view to purchasing a WDTV live box.

Have read that the WDTV live will play iso files from a my book live drive so I thought I would experiment with the process before I actually buy the streaming box for my tv.

Having downloaded the DVD Fab program and reading various articles and posts on this forum on the subject of archiving DVDs to hard drives.....I gave it a go ( not that fantastic on computers at the best of times...! )

Tested with a copy of Constantine on DVD.

Loaded the disc which came up in the top box as CONSTANTINE_DISC_1

Clicked the ISO button with the target as C:\Users\Chris\Documents\DVD Fab\ISO\CONSTANTINE_DISC_1.iso

Selected only the main title function and quality as DVD9 in the bottom box

Everything OK so far.......Hit next and left the copy DVD-video(VIDEO_TS Folder) checked

Hit start and watched for about 40 minutes while it did its thing.....Everything seemed OK but ended up with a .rar archive file..

Now What.....?

Need some help.....!

Post the logs please. This is weird and a first for me!

And do a search for *.iso, it may not be where you think it is?

I just tried this with Total Recall and it worked fine. I use ImgBurn as my preferred burning engine. No problems at all.

2nd attempt @ Constantine test

Ran the same setup a second time...( with one eye on the screen constantly )
Information screen whilst copying...

Screen read....Copying VTS_01_1.VOB....Copied 6 files up to....VTS_01_6.VOB

Disc ejected and then went to Task 2 of 2....Writing 9.9x(13.35MB/s)

Process completed successfully and a new window launched...

Chris>Downloads>DVD Fab>ISO............This contained a folder

CONSTANTINE_DISC_1.iso 04/01/2013 21:31 WinRAR archive 5,245,824KB

Double clicking on this launches WinRAR...then you get

CONSTANTINE_DISC_1.iso-UDF 1.02 archive, unpacked size 5,370,605,568Bytes

This then contains three files, a file folder, AUDIO_TS folder which is empty and VIDEO_TS folder containing....

VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB
VTS_01_4.VOB

Clicking on any one of these will start the extraction process

I suppose i could extract the CONSTANTINE_DISC_1.iso with the target being my book live films but, will I end up with a single file that is recognised by the WDTV live and more to the point....Will it play it...!!!!

If it works I don't mind too much but,why the extra step of extracting from WinRAR

You don't need to extract it at all, Just copy the iso to the WDTV. RAR is seeing it as a compressed volume that's all.

I use a WDTV Live (along with couple other media players) which are connected to WD MyBook (&other) HD drives and it plays .iso files made by DVDFab or Imgburn just fine ...
I convert most movies over to an H264 mp4 to save disk space but also have a few .iso moviefiles ... as pointed out already, the .rar files you see are the byproduct of the WinRAR archive compresser which you apparently have running ...

SideNote: You may see small .bmk(bookmark) files on the HD connected to WDTV which that player makes only on .iso movie files to keep track of 'resume' points .. you can delete these if you wish ...

Which naturally happens if you can't be bothered to check the extensions being associated with Winrar during installation. So you DO have a regular ISO but told windows to open it with Winrar instead of a VLC or something.

Yes, if you want to go directly from DVD to a popular file format like Apple .mv4 (which is basically .mp4), .mkv, etc , you can use the DVDFab DVD Ripper module instead of using the DVD Copy module (which makes folder/iso output) using a profile appropriate to your needs. Details/usage are well described in tutorials on DVDFab site & check out the Ripper forum too.

If you have need to also retain DVD folder/iso image then you need DVD Copy to do this while removing DVD protection & a video transcoder pgm to convert the result to a different format file such as mp4/mkv file. DVDFab modules can of course handle the whole job. Much info on this, do a little creative searching. jak
