dvd5 = quality 57%

friends,

i have a general question:

whenever backing up a full disk dvd5 - it says quality 57%. sometimes it's a little more, sometimes less.

once my copy is made - is that copy not as good as the original? meaning how good the picture and sound are??

Percentage tells me you are compressing a DVD9 to DVD5. Please also post a screenshot.

The audio is not changed at all but the video is compressed to 57%.

How good? That is subjective and it is totally up to you but most old timers suggest that less than 80% is noticeable...

Yup, GregiBoy's advice is solid as always.
There are many factors to take into account such as the bitrate of the original video.

On the other hand, just take GregiBoy's advice. You can bank on it.

Subjective is correct. I find using the best blank media available to me and a good quality DVD burner that full disc DVD9 to DVD5 backups with lots of compression acceptable.
I cannot see a visible difference between original and backup disc. (with my glasses on also lol)

i apologize - the original dvd are ones from my libray (purchased from the store) that i want to back up. are these considered "dvd9" ????

For screenshot press "Print Screen" on your keyboard.

DVDFab is normally telling at the bottom next to quality how big the files are (e. g. 6000 MB -> 4300 MB).

Most (but not ALL) commercially produced DVD's are DVD9.

I generally use "Main Movie" mode instead of "Full Disk".

This cuts out all the extra crap and ensures the least compression when going to DVD5.

I can tell the difference but I don't think it's noticable to distract from the movie. The only dull Full Disc back ups and only time I notice something is really wrong is when it's a longer movie and it's the previews before the movie that are really distracting looking but not the main film, special features, or the movie menu. Like with The Dark Knight as an example it plays previews before it gets to the movie menu and those previews are really blocky looking.

I use main movie also. Gregiboy is correct, you cut out alot of crap you don't need. I use an upconverting dvd player and a ps3, to play my back ups. I watch them on an lcd t.v. Even using a good quality media, I find that I do notice a difference on my backups when I start dropping below 80%, with the set up that I have. As Maineman said there are many factors.
