DVDFab stays running, locks up machine

I have been working with their support for this issue for almost 3 months. I have been directed to uninstall and re-install, try the latest beta versions, send them logs and screen shots and so far nothing helps.

I also find that once the application is started that I cannot stop it. If I close the application and tell it to close, not minimize, the process remains running. In my case it also will not rip or convert anything.

If I start the application and place a disc in the tray, it acts like it is going to work, but I never see the scanning windows. At this point it fails to respond and also will refuse to close. I have found that it also causes Explorer.exe process to also hang and/or crash. In almost every case a graceful shutdown is not possible. I have to perform a hard reset of the machine.

I assumed an issue with the machine, but I also use AnyDVD and that was successful at ripping / copying.

This is a newly imaged Windows 7 SP1 machine. I tested it with no additional software installed and it performed the same way.

If anyone knows of something to try please let me know.

Did you do a clean uninstall with CC cleaner to clean the registry and junk files before re installing Fab? If not download the free version of cc cleaner and give that a try clean the registry several times till nothing comes up. (check clean prefetch files when cleaning junk files it's on the left side it's unchecked by default when done uncheck it for normal cleaning) do this before before re installing Fab and get Fab from the front page or forum.

Also don't have 2 ripper programs running at the same time use one at a time.If you have Magic jack that causes it's own problems with Fab.Bit defender security program also has trouble with Fab if you have those let us know also.

      Hi glenns,

I did indeed use cc cleaner prior to installing the latest version. I wanted to confirm that there were no corrupt or incorrect files for the latest install, but unfortunately I ended up with the same results.

I also made sure that AnyDVD runs only as a manual program, meaning only when I launch it. I confirmed that there are no additional processes running in the background for it either.

Is there anything else you could recommend? One thing to note and I'm not sure if it would make a difference or not, but this PC is using an onboard video card. Could this be part of the issue?

Do you have all the windows updates?
What card do you have and what firmware version are you using?
          Check this:
Note: The latest NVIDIA driver version 337.88 has some compatibility problems when converting with CUDA in DVDFab. Please roll back to the old driver version 334.89 or 335.23 if you are using the device (GTX 640/650/660/670/680/690/750/760/770/780/TITAN) that supports CUDA 3.0/3.5/5.0. Our developers and NVIDIA engineers are checking the problem. Thanks!

I don't think this would cause your problem but you can check it anyway.
If anyone else here has any helpful information for this problem please free to join in helping with this problem.

Did one of the Fab staff offer to take over your computer? This is a simple process they use a program that you download called team viewer 9 could be a update to it and called something else but it lets them control your computer from theirs so they can do all the work you just watch in the background and they can talk to you on screen if they need you. This will let them see whats going on first hand.If all else fails you can ask them to do this just remember they are about 12 hours difference they get online about 8-9pm est and their up all night in U.S. time zones.

              glenns / CBR929,

I did use C Cleaner as requested, but to confirm I didn't miss anything I did the following:

              1. I uninstalled the current version of DVDFab (9.1.56 US).
              2. I located the DVDFab folder in Documents and deleted it.
              3. I ran CCleaner to locate any left over registry keys and removed them.
              4. I restarted the PC.
              5. I installed DVDFab 9.1.5.6 and activated it.
              6. Once the program opened I opened the settings > Common Settings
              7. On the General Tab I enabled "Add Autoplay Handler"
              8. I went to Diagnosis and confirmed that all logs were enabled as well as "Run report program when DVDFab crashes.

Now here are the interesting things I have found:
If I click on General in Common Settings and then click Drives, nothing is displayed.
If I click on A/V Codec I see the following (screen shot attached):
              Graphics Chipset :
              Intel(R) G33/G31 Express Chipset Family

              Supported Video Codecs :

              CoreAVC : cannot be detected.

What it feels like to me is that the software is having a hard time hooking into the dvd drives (1 a DVD reader and 1 is a DVD writer).

I have also attached a text file with the hardware specs for this machine, a couple of screen shots, the logs.

I have the latest video driver installed for the video card, which I got directly from Intel and the OS is fully patched. At this time I am running without Antivirus to eliminate that as a possible cause.

As to did anyone from the DVDFab support team offer to take over the PC, no. So far the only correspondence has been through email. In fact I was quite surprised this was not even broached.

Again thanks for the help and let me know if anything else is needed.

                glenns,

I should also mention that I did run CCleaner as requested, several times until it showed clean with no results.

Try updating your dvd burner drive firmware from device manager in Windows or the drives manufacturers internet sight.Follow all directions or you can render the drive useless.

Did you clean out the old prefetch data when you used cc cleaner to clean out old files?
What security program are you using?
Have you tried removing your video card and see if Fab will work?
Have you tried version 8 of Fab? if not it's worth a try.
Core AVC is a program you buy so don't worry about it not being detected.

                      Hi doodleink2000
Is this install of Windows 7 from an "Image" you made or a "fresh" install???
If from an Image maybe some files were corrupt. Did you also install the drivers for your motherboard and also check for updates to them?
I would install the latest drivers from Dell associated with your computers hardware.
                      Hope this helps

                          Wilson,

I have tried both with a DVD inserted and without. It produces the same results. The DVDFab.exe process remains running after closing the program. All attempts to kill the process fail. Any attempt to access the dvd drives (either one) causes explorer to become unresponsive.

                          glenns,

I have not attempted to update the firmware for either burner. I was tempted but as other application (AnyDVD, DVD Shrink, and ImgBurn) all recognize the drives I wasn't sure if it was necessary.

As for security program, I assume you mean antivirus. I currently have none installed with windows defender disabled, again to remove that as a possible cause.

I am not able to remove the video card as it is an onboard Intel G33/G31. I have uninstalled the drivers, cleaned the system and re-installed with no change. I have the latest drivers from the Intel site for this video adapter.

As for version 8, that was the first version I tried when this all started, version 8.2.30. This was what prompted me to check for an updated version.

I also checked Dell for the latest bios update thinking it was worth a try. I now have the latest drivers for motherboard, video and bios.

I believe I did do a SFC, but let me run it and I will reply when it finishes.

                          CBR929,

This install was from a fresh install of windows 7.

                            Hi glenns,

I completed the scan. Here are the results:

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
                            Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I also did not answer fully your question on CCleaner. I did the initial 2 passes with the prefetch option checked.

Please confirm your downloading a new version of Fab from Fabs front page or the forum?
Go into your bios and check the drives show up their and the order the computer loads information.

If yes to the above question I am at a loss and can't think of any more reasons why this is acting this way for you after doing all the recommended things.

The one thing you didn't do is upgrade the internal dvd drives.I looked up the drive cost it's $29 I highly recommend you update the firmware if needed check from device manager as if windows does the update for you don't have to worry about doing the upgrade wrong or using the wrong firmware.

They make updates to fix bugs, make new dvds and blu rays work better, add more brands of blank disks they can write to and different burn speeds, add improvements to read and write and other things that can be very important they don't make updates for no reason.Just because it works with another program doesn't mean it will work well with Fab.

Is both drives internal drives? I know if their are to many USB devices plunged into a computer one device stops working or gets under powered and doesn't work correct.

Did you do a full virus scan if not do so besides this and using the corrupt windows files scanner I can't think of anything else to try unless it worked at one time then i would do a system restore to a time when it did work or reformat the drive and start over with a fresh Windows install this will kill any viruses. Before you do this see if Wilson or other staff and or forum members can add anything to help you.Looking at Fab past history whenever their was a problem like this a full cleaning as instructed with cc cleaner always restored the problem so I am at a loss to help any further at this time lets see if others can help or think of something I may have over looked.
