DVD fails burning at about 94-96%, error code 123

Hi all, wonder if you can help with this- dual-layer dvds often fail to write at between 94 and 96%, the error code given is 123. Although the log below was a fairly cheap CMC disc, it's also happened with Verbatim and Sony media- and the drive will happily write some titles, but not others, so I don't believe it's a hardware issue. It's a Matshita drive which came with my laptop- it's probably not the best I'm not looking to invest in pro-standard equipment because I'd just like to be able to run off the odd copy occasionally, nothing serious... What am I doing wrong? Starting to get a bit frustrated! Here's what the log says-

You problem I think is that Matshita drive. Laptop drives are useless for burning dl's. Even with Imgburn. I use a laptop myself but use an external drive to read and burn. See if you can borrow one of a mate and try the titlie again.

I would suggest using Image Burn if not already also slow down your burn speed to 2.4. Also one other thought update your OS to SP2 and try again.

Just tried again with Imgburn- it got to 99% (which is a definite improvement!) but failed again.
The error message is:-
I/O error!

Interpretation- check condition

Seems to say that it's a problem with the drive, yet it'll copy other discs with no problem...

However the Imgburn log says several times "Cannot write medium- incompatible format"
Again...I've used the same discs successfully...
Anybody have any idea what's going on? I'm not very tech-savvy!

It the matSHITa Drive you have on the laptop and cheap media you are using. What I would do if I was you is get an external DVD drive to use for burning and use the internal for reading. From what I understand ImgBurn is saying the problem is with the DVD drive and the blank media you use. If laptop is still under warrenty take it back and say you can not burn a DVD and you want them to fix the problem

Well, I bit the bullet and bought an external drive (LG) and some Verbatim media, and although the dvd will burn and the successful copy message appears, my dvd player won't recognise the disc- tries to load and a message appears saying that it's empty.
Anybody any idea what's happening now or am I just fated? Thanks!

It may be that your standalone player is not compatible with the media.
I had that problem with a Really nice DVD player that my Wife won at a golf tournament for longest drive. It would not play anything but store bought discs. So I went and bought a cheapie from Walmart and it would play everything.

I don't think it's the player as it usually has no problem reading copied media, including DL discs of the same brand. Anybody?

This burn was with the same crappy media...RICOH D01 and burned with VSO.
I thought you were using MKM 001 or MKM 003 (Verbs) and Img

No surprise that you're not getting consistent results with this media as they are unreliable for video archiving.

Oh, and nothing wrong with cheap dvd players...they often do better than the expensive brands.
My luck has been great with cheap.
The one exception for me has my Pioneer...outstanding player.

Yep, I used the cheap disc in case it didn't work first time with the new drive, but I've used those for a while and never had a problem with the actual media.
I must have changed the burning engine back to VSO...I'll have another go with Img- thanks!
