DVD fails burning at about 94-96%, error code 123

Again, no surprise that the D01 plays on your lappie and not your player.
To sort this, please use the Verbs, Img and your external LG drive.

You have too many variables and the D01's are your biggest problem.
Marginal/crap media will often give different results even within the same spindle and using the same hardware.
In a word, Unreliable.

Inferior media also has longevity issues.
A so-called decent burn that plays ok now, may surprise you and not play so well...or at all in 6 months or so down the road.

Just out of curiosity, what brands would you say to avoid and which tend to be ok? I'll be avoiding the D01's now- thanks for your help and patience!

No problem.
Really the only consistently recommended DL media is Verbatim +R DL.
Made in Singapore (MIS) is preferred, but Made in India (MII) beats the crapshoot.
Look on the spindle wrapper for the manufacturer's location.
The MID will be MKM 001 (2.4-4X) and MKM 003 (up to 8X).
It'll be the same MID for either location

For SL media, Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim.
My personal favorite media on the planet is YUDEN000 T02 (+R 8X media)
Ty has not made DL media in years and they only produced -R DL and it was lousy media.
BTW, never use -R DL media for video archiving.
For SL, either -R or +R is just fine.

Now, can you get decent burns with other media?...of course.
But you can buy quality media pretty cheaply these days and often with free shipping when purchased online.
It's just not worth the gamble.

Where to buy depends on location, but here in the U.S.,
supermediastore, newegg, meritline, rima, etc., are all decent retailers with respect to blank media, but you still need to be a vigilant consumer.
