Ripping Problems

Hello all,

I posted a while back about having problems with ISO files playing back with skipping. It appeared to be a problem with scratches being present on the disc, although the scratches did not appear to be that bad and DVD fab reported no errors while ripping. This has occurred on several dvds, although some have ripped successfully. I tried cleaning the discs and even went as far as purchasing a JFJ easy pro. I downloaded the VSO inspector that someone had mentioned in another post tried before cleaning (vso reported errors) and after cleaning with the JFJ and errors are still reported on the VOB files only. I tried the cleaned disc on 2 different computers and several different drives and the same problems still exist. I'm racking my brains at this point and don't know what the problem could be at this point. Does anyone have any ideas?

If VSO Inspector is reporting errors, even after you've done a cleaning, then I suspect you have a bad disc (as in Mfr. error or bad pressing).

All you can do is go back to where you bought it and see if they'll give you a replacement. There's nothing you can do at home to fix that kind of problem.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry I should have been more clear. This is happening on several discs all of which have played successfully playing in a dvd player. All of which have been manufactured at different times and all of which are several years old. That's why I'm racking my brains. I would really like to figure out what the problem is. I guess I could try some other discs, but if I have to watch the import through it's entirety to ensure there are no problems with the rip, then this will be a really tedious process. Right now I've had about a 50% success rate. Is that normal? Am I doing something wrong?

What media are you using to write these ISO files to?

A burn log would be real helpful to us in figuring this out. See the Help Us Help You stickie.

Also, ripping is far more demanding than playing and the scratched disks, although they will play, may not be able to be ripped correctly.

That may be the case. Some of those discs may be unrecoverable. One question about the VSO Inspector. Does it not work on inspecting certain dvds? For example, I tried ripping The Shaggy Dog and that movie played back perfectly even there were some scratches on the disc, but VSO Inspector threw read errors on all of the VOB files. Tried Monsters Inc. in the VSO Inspector which is a brand new dvd disc and the VSO Inspector threw errors on the VOB files as well. All of the other files on the discs read fine. Am I doing something wrong or did I misunderstand what VSO Inspector could be used for?

Utilities such as VSO Inspector and Nero CD-DVD Speed that are used to "scan" copy protected discs frequently don't work adequately when used alone.
Typically these are run with an on-the-fly-decrypter to be effective.

You can also start to play the copy protected disc with a software player and this should suffice.
I recommend VLC, although something like Powerdvd will work just fine.

Stop play after the movie starts, but do not exit the player.
Now scan with VSO and you should be able to obtain reliable results.

Just my 2 cents, I prefer Nero CD-DVD Speed, but this is just my personal preference.
It's faster and does a whole lot more.

I should mention that Nero CD-DVD Speed (freeware) has morphed into Opti Drive Control which now costs $24.95.
You can still find Nero CD-DVD Speed v.4.7.7.16 on the net from reliable sources though and don't pay for it since it is freeware.

Sorry, I'm just now responding back. Thanks for your help. That fixed the problem and allowed VSO to scan the disc all the way through. I'll definitely check out Nero.
