    Hi gr8ful and welcome

112 HWS_DEVICEINITFAILED 12 // initialization of the writing device has failed

This error occurs in the Write phase, correct?
Probably a VSO and/or blank media problem.
(VSO is the default burn engine for Fab. It's installed with the retail version).

Please post (copy & paste) a burn log or 2 and we'll have a look.
    We need more info.

    The default location is:
    C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\DVDFab\Log

      Hi again gr8ful,

We prefer all help dialogue, remains here on the board.
This way all parties benefit; those receiving help and those offering help.
Plus, it's easy to follow and no one is wondering...
How did he fix that? etc., etc.

Not to worry. You didn't do anything wrong and I realize you're new at this and we'll help you out

The fact that you received a message indicating VSO is working properly, doesn't make it so, but we really need more info regardless.

There are several methods to copy & paste, here's one:
Simply left click your mouse (and hold the button down) at the beginning of the text you wish to copy >

Drag the mouse to the end of the text you're copying, all the while holding down the left button >

Now hold down the crtl key and press the c key
(you've just copied the text) >

To paste it, left click the mouse on whatever location you wish...like a reply box here on the forum or Notepad or wherever.

Now hold down the ctrl key and press the v key
      (you've just pasted the text...congratulations)

You're probably going to switch burn engines to Img to resolve this, but one thing at a time

gr8ful please install Imgburn found here http://forum.dvdfab.com/showthread.php?t=33 also after that slow your burn speed to 1/2 the rated speed of your media. Another note also update to the newest version of Fab.

              And, do yourself a favor.

As well as taking CBR929's advice, also lose the Moses Baer DL discs.. they are marginal at best.

For Dual Layer discs, the only ones we recommend are the Verbatim (Made In Singapore).

You may or may not have success writing one or two of the MB discs, but otherwise, they are rather expensive coasters...

The Verbatims may seem expensive, but if you keep your eyes peeled, they can be had for a reasonable price on sale.

The same adage that applies to anything you can purchase also applies to this stuff, too... You Get What You Pay For.

I see you've received some excellent advice...as usual...

After switching to Img, you may even get the marginal (DC was being kind...) Moser-Baer discs
to burn ok, but do yourself a favor and pick up the Verbs as he suggested.
Keep in mind it's not just the quality of the burn, but also the longevity of the bkup.
