You have two problems, sir. Firstly, you're writing the media too fast... write speed should be set at 4-6X, not 8X.

Your second problem is the drive you are using. It would be in your best interests to lose that drive, and invest in a better one... LG, Sony, Pioneer... there are many available.

Do your successful writes tend to come when the drive hasn't been used much prior to the write?

These drives give allot of people problems, try blowing out the drive with a can of compressed air.
You can also try installing ImgBurn it is far better than the vso burn engine in Fab you can find that here with a tutorial on how to set it up
Also try burning at 1/2 the rated speed of your media.

Nickers I see your second burn today failed. This can also be a heat issue. I am assuming this burner is in a laptop, try keeping it cool.

OK guys, thanks for your replies.

So, I have blown out the drive with a can of air. I installed ImgBurn and tried copying the disc at 4x speed. Still did not burn.

ImgBurn gave an error message re: Power Calibration etc. so am assuming it also believes the drive to be dirty.

The drive is in a laptop, and I do keep it very clean.

However, we have no aircon and live in Far Northern Australia.

I actually wrote to my landlord 2 weeks ago asking for aircon, as my electronics keep overheating.

Darth, the opposite tends to be true - my successful writes are usually first. Which says to me it may be the heat issue as suggested by CBR.

When I play movies, the drive stops dead with every single disc at around 20 mins in.

This drive is so crap it's not funny. Still under warranty, so I may go down that path. Maybe I can request a different brand for replacement (yeah right)...

Obviously the prob is not with Fab (which is great cos I love it). So I won't waste anyone's time anymore.

Nickers I am glad we are getting to problem if you need anymore help give a shout.

Must be nice to have too use air conditioning, here in Upstate New York we just got pounded with 20 inches of snow.

MatSHITa drives are the worst to have and use for laptop computers maybe if you can borrow a friends external DVD drive to see if that will work for you but do not go and buy one as you did say the laptop is under warranty still. Since the drive is over heating and you are unable to burn anything to a DVD then I would say it a faulty DVD drive and I would believe it is under warranty

Yeah, but I'll bet ya they replace it with another matSHITa which will have the same inherent problems.
