Yeah, I don't think he knows where to look. Thanks for the idea.
Hopefully the guide with the screenshots will help him.
The registry patch I linked might be the best bet if he still has problems.

I'm a little confused as he doesn't have IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in device manager, I checked on my daughters dell and she has it. I'm sure we'll get it working for him.

Should I now try deleteing the current drivers ? cause on my device manager I don't see IDE/ATA anywhere ?

What make & model pc do you have?

Let's try what CBR929 suggested and uninstall your drivers for your DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
Here are some screenshots. They'll look different since it's Win7, but it'll still provide a useful guide.

Click on the little + (to expand) just to the left of your DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
In Win7 the + is replaced by a small triangle....I circled it in green.




Now doubleclick the dvd drive that you wish to uninstall the driver on.



Now uninstall the driver.
Not to worry.
Your DVD drives use native XP drivers (the ones that are part of the operating system).

Now reboot your system.
XP will detect your DVD drive(s) and install the appropriate drivers
You do not need any external drivers.

Sorry for the delay in a reply things got a little ruff and had little time to myself. Anyway thanks again for all the help. I deleted the drives to my drive and I still don't see IDE ATA/ATAPI. I have a dell xps 410. Here is a link to the screen shoots you asked for, if there is anything else please just let me know.

Have you tried to burn anything? If so, could you please post your burn logs to see if your drive is still in PIO mode.

No problem about delays...we all have lives.
After confirming that you're still in PIO mode (I suspect you are, but let's hope you're not)...
try physically uninstalling your burners/dvd drives.

It's no big deal. You have drives with a SATA interface
There's a power cable and a data cable running to each drive...that's it.
Here's an idea of what'll look like
(won't be exactly as pictured):

Power the pc off.
In your case, lay the pc on it's left side.
Pull back the cover release latch on the top panel.
Open the right side of the case
(usually it's the left, but looks like the right on your model).

Ground yourself by touching the bare metal frame (not painted) just to discharge any static electricity.
Unplug the cables.

Power up the pc and then power down.

Reconnect/recable the drives.
Snap the side of the case back on.

Power up.

This should get you out of PIO

Ok I back for more lol I tried what you said i unpluged the drive real easy stuff thanks to you. I then tried to burn a movie and I am stil in PIO mode

If you have any more ideas i'm down to try anything..... now on the bright side if you don't I just got off the phone with dell to order a new pc. The new pc should run circles the old one.

Agreed NVidia is a far better video card.

Another note the log in posted #26 is the same log as post#12, so this is not a current log.
