Having all sorts of burning problems

I have all of a sudden am having problems buring discs, most of the time it start and then says failed to burn, right from the get go. but I have also had problems with it burning half the disc, and then failing, and even the rare couple of times it finished, and said it burned succesfully, but it hadn't and wouldn't play at all. In those few instances I've noticed that when you look at the disc it's very much scattered burned areas. btw the were all different movies, and all in dual layer mode. i was only succesful once in a full working burn, doing a single layer disc. but the picture looked grainy since it had to shrink it. anyway, if anyone could help me with me with this it would be great. i have also just downloaded the newest version of FAB as well.

here is a copy of my most recent logs for the past few days of dealing with this

You have a 2 problems. One with your burner and the other one with crap media.

Also to add to what GregiBoy mentioned you are trying to burn at too fast a speed for the cheap blank media you have. Once you have done what GregiBoy mentioned try with a burn speed of 4X and not 8X

so I cleaned the the burner with one of those cd cleaners and i set the speed lower to only go no further than a 4x write speed.

However i was using Sony DL DVD+RW disc, so if you have any suggestions on a better media I'm open.

now my when I put in that same above mentioned media, it just ties up my computer. DVDFab just sit there running it's process of determinig the installed media, an goes into a non-responsive mode, and so does everything else including windows explorer., but as soon as i eject the media, everything starts working again.

Your burner and firmware are not liking your blank media at all.
I don't think your burner was dirty, but the atapi error code indicates this as a likely cause.

No offense, but the Ritek (Ritek-S04-42) and Sony (MBIPG101-R10-41,..these are Moser Baer, made in India)
are crappy media although sometimes they yield marginal results.

Pick up some Verbatim +R DL media.
          Either 2.4X (MKM 001) or 8X (MKM 003).
Please look on the spndle wrapper and note the manufacturer location.
Try to pick up made in Singapore (MIS)...these are the best of the best.

At my local Sam's Club, I can pick up the MKM 001 (MIS) for $42.01/50 pk spindle...sweet deal at Sam's regular price!

The made in India are not bad for a 2nd choice...better than the crapshoot with other brands.

Sorry I don't have time to look up your firmware...this is a dell desktop?
Just type in your service tag code.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Sorry, I'm trying to be productive here at work...sigh, another unreasonable employer...expecting me to work...

Also, I think you would do well to switch to Img for your burn engine.
            It is far superior.
Here's a link to a video tutorial and download link for the app:

            Also, when opening Img,
take a look at your upper and lower filters.
Post them here so we can take a look.

              Thanks for the advice!
I can not find my dell service tag number at all
I did try installing Imgburn, and running through that. aalthough the stars were all the average color on the layer break, so i previed all of them, not even sure if i need to have one, but i selected the one i thought looked the best.
              Everything still failed though
even after the fixIT program found and fixed it (supposedly)

How new is your dell desktop? could have firmware or dll issue somewhere. I have an external blu-ray that gives me the same error of power calibration and i cleaned it once and it worked but then i got it again cleaned and nothing. I also tried various other media and still get get it. However with the dvd to dvd part I h avent had issues with my internal laptop DVD burner at all with any media. Maybe I should use the blu-ray to burn dvd's and see what happens there.

                    Re: Upper Class filter: GERAspiWDm
Do you use Sonic or Roxio...the drag and drop stuff?
Initially, I thought this was Apple but it turns out it's Sonic/Roxio.

I'd get rid of it. If you want it, you can always reinstall Sonic/Roxio.
Click on the MS link I posted above and it'll guide you through it. I think Vista is the first os listed.

I'm pretty sure your other filters are ok. Sometimes PXhelp20 can cause a problem from what I've read though...hopefully a different variety than yours.

Once you delete GERAspiWDm, I'd uninstall your burner in device manager.
On reboot windoz will install it and assign appropriate drivers.

Go with the verbies... +R DL, X your fingers, hold onto your arse...... and give it another shot.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Sorry, my bad....serves me right for not checking.
                        Here'a working link:

Find out what files, registry keys and other objects processes have open, which DLLs they have loaded, and more.

Have you had a chance to dump that crap media and pick up the verbs?

Okay I ran that link, but as embaraased as I am to say this, it was quite confusing...I'm assuming it's showing me all my current processes running, but i'm not really sure what to do with this info, or how to walk through getting rid of Roxio.

and no i still haven't gotten the verbies...lol, been really busy.
I still think it.s strange that really everything was working fine, and then it was like someone flipped a switch, and Boom, and now it doesn't...strange.

should i just go to the add/remove software and dump roxio that way?

also one of my lower filters is no longer there...the AnyDVD was a trial version, and I uninstalled it, now it shows nothing.
