    When does compression become problem?

If I'm compressing down to a DVD-5, at what percentage will I see/notice video degradation?

That will depend somewhat on the age of your eyes and the size of your TV screen.

What is a loss of quality to some would not be noticed by others.
Only you can decide at what compression you start to notice a change.

Most old hands recommend not going below 80%. A lot of titles will fit on a DVD5 over this percentage if you use the "Movie Only" mode.

Agree with my good pal Gruñón.
Having said that, many of us old farts settle in somewhere around 80% as a general rule of thumb.

As mentioned, there are many variables both objective and subjective.
Some are more crucial than others such as the bitrate of the original.

It also depends a great deal on what you're watching, say for eg.,
Avatar vs. an episode of the old, b&w, tv series Twilight Zone.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Myself I will not go below 70% which comes out beautifully on my Sharp 52 inch LCD TV but it depends on you to see how low you can go and still get a good picture
