No media detected in drive h:

First let me start by saying I do not know much about computers so please don't take me through the ringer too bad! I have tried using NERO, Imgburn, DVD Shrink and now DVDFab 7. I am able to copy the disk (Moulin Rouge in this case) but when it tells me to insert the disk I want to copy it onto I get a no media detected in drive h:. I have tried putting in Verbatim +R, Verbatim DVD+R DL, and Sony DVD +R all with the same error message. I have even tried the help of using DVDFab and Imgburn together like someone suggested to another user but it doesn't work. I'm not sure which log is that is needed so I put 2 that have info on them:

Are you sure you have a DVD burner??
This looks like you do not.

    2010-05-12 21:31:58 Info Compatible media types : CD-R, CD-RW

It should also list DVD-R and DVD+R if it is a DVD burner.

I did a quick Google on your drive.
It is a CD burner and DVD Reader.
      It cannot burn DVDs.

Thanks so much...now I feel stupid! So, can I buy an external dvd rom that will plug into a USB? Would that work?

You are not the first to make that mistake [I think I was] and you will not be the last.

Do not buy a DVD Rom buy a DVD R/RW burner.
A dvd rom is a reader only.

                    Essentially, you have 2 options.
You can go with an external burner or go with an internal burner in an external enclosure.
When all is said and done, either option will cost about the same.

                    Both have advantages and disadvantages.
You may have said, but I didn't catch it...apologies... is this a laptop or desktop?

To oversimplify, the external burner will be easier/simpler
The internal with an external enclosure will afford many more choices and more versatility.

Do some looking at the retailers posted by Gruñón.
If you have questions at that point, just give us a holler
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I have been looking at the dvd burners and I noticed something I thought someone could answer for me...it shows an SATA and ATA interface. If it shows my driver is an ATA device do I have to get another ATA device or does it matter? And do I have to connect an external burner to the motherboard or will it connect with a USB port?

Sata and ata [pata] [ide] will not interchange. If purchasing an internal be sure of what you have before making the purchase.

As far as an external both sata and ata will have their own power supply and plug into a usb port. So it does not matter which one you purchase.
