    Problem with disc verify?

I recently had a problem backing up a standard commercial DVD using version 6.0.7.0 so I upgraded to 6.1.0.5 beta. That version gave the same problem (a 6.8 GB original resulted in an 18 MB copy) so I gave up at the time only to discover later that the original was actually defective.

The next disc I tried to backup appeared to go well and got to the point of saying writing completed successfully when the backup disc was ejected and I got a message from DVDFab "Close the disk door for drive D:" (or words to that effect). I closed the drive only to have the same thing happen again and again (I have retries set to 3) and then the process aborted. The copy appeared to be OK but the same thing happened on two subsequent discs.

Thinking it might be a bug in the beta I backed off to 6.0.7.0 and now the same thing happened. This was all on a Dell D610 laptop with a single hard drive and a single optical drive.

Now thinking the laptop might have a problem I installed 6.0.7.0 on my desktop machine which has two optical drives and a similar thing happened but for a slight difference. When the read was complete the drive with the original opened and writing began to the second drive with the blank. When writing was complete the drive opened then closed. I got the same message about the closing the door for less than a second replaced by a 'process failed' message.

That action sent me to the DVD write options where "Verify disc after finished burning" was checked on. I checked it off and reran the process without a problem. Then I went back to the laptop, changed the same setting and successfully ran a test copy.

I'm pretty sure *I* turned the verify option on because I'm starting to copy a lot of family discs for the grandchildren and I want to be certain they are good copies before committing them to the postal service.

    The technical stuff:

Both machines are running WinXP Pro Sp3 and using Verbatim DVD-R discs

Laptop: Dell D610, Intel Celeron P3 1.8GHz CPU, 1 GB memory, 60 GB/7200RPM internal HDD, internal NEC ND-6500A optical drive

Desktop: Home-made, Asus P5WD2 mobo, Pentium-D 2 GHz, 2 GB RAM, total of 1.2 TB SATA Raid 1 HDD, LG GSA-H22L and LG GSA-4163B internal optical drives.

Before offering assistance, you're not sending the dvd backed up with this log in the mail to anyone right? that would be piracy and that's not a good thing. I'm guessing you posted the wrong log or forgot and backed up this movie just to troubleshoot for your own personal use right?

Your assumption is correct, W&B - this disc was just being archived for personal use. The discs going in the mail are family movies painstakingly mastered from over 20 years of nasty videotape. Since discovering DVDFab and VideoRedo I have forever purged my machines of Roxio and its ilk for duplication and I don't trust the Windows copy integrity.

As for your problem I suggest d/ling ImgBurn and following Troy512's instructions for installing and setting up the automatic write speed. select the "Verify disc after finished burning" within Fab. The VSO burn engine is buggy for some users and you'll find that You'll have much better success with the verify option with that program.

Yeah I'm sorry I just wanted to make sure my friend.
Edit: btw I wouldn't use that laptop for backups. those slim type drives are less than dependable so either use your desktop or a usb type drive with the lappy.

Thanks for the imgburn suggestion - I'll give that a shot when I get to the critical discs.

As for using the laptop - that's the machine's only function in life. It's battery gave up the ghost long ago so is of no use for travelling and I have made far too many coasters trying to burn discs while multitasking - even on the big desktop. When the internal drive dies (any day now) I'll get an external USB drive to last until the machine gives up the ghost.

Your laptop appears to not burn well. I would use the desktop burner to burn.

VSO verification process is not as good as Imgburn's. If the burn is successful on a Verbatim, often times you don't need to verify. Just play the disc to see everything's ok.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I used Troy512's excellent instructions to install ImgBurn and ran some test backups tonight. All worked well and the verify function seems to confirm reliability of the backup.

Now, playing Devil's Advocate (since my customers love to do this to me daily), why isn't ImgBurn included with DVDFab as a default instead of VSO?

I'm not beating up anyone over this - just a simple question guys.
