    Remember Me DL burning problem

I have sucessfully ripped the DVD to the harddrive. I chose "main movie" and DVD9 size to avoid compression. I am running windows XP SP3 and have a licensed version of dvdfab.

I determined the rip to be good as i have played it with VLC and it plays flawlessly.

I use imgburn to burn the disk and the burn log is below. What happens it it burns fine in task 1 but when it verifies (task 2) it gets halfway or so and then an "incorrectable error" comes up. My guess is that it is happening at the layer break but I can't confirm it.

I am using verbatim DL 8x media burning at 2.4X. I used to burn at 4X but 1 or 2 bad burns lately caused me to try burning at 2.4X which allowed good burns on the problem movies.

    Several problems:

W 20:16:37 Drive D:\ (FAT32) does not support single files > 4 GB in size.

I'm not sure why you have this hdd/partition formatted as FAT32.
You'll need NTFS to handle any file size > 4 GB

    See:

You can convert this hdd/partition to NTFS without reformatting, but should you wish to revert, you would have to reformat

Your slimline burner is less than ideal for video archiving.
You will be far better off with an standard external drive or a standard internal drive in an external enclosure.

While MKM 003 is good quality DL media, if you're restricted to burning at 2.4X, MKM 001 is a better choice

Ultimately, the question to be answered is:

Does the bkup disc play ok?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

The drive "D" is the recovery partition as setup by the disk provided by HP. All other partitions and drives are NTFS. The rip went to drive "F".

True that a laptop slimline DVD burner is not ideal but it has been reliable. If it is a hardware problem then the answer is clear. I was just wondering if the burn log offered anything useful as to something I could do differantly or reveal a setting that would correct the problem.

Yes, the backup DL disk does stop, start and then lock-up at chapter 8 when played on both a standalone player and with windows media player.

As far as MKM-003 burning at 2.4X, I just slowed the burn speed down from 4.0X in an attempt to get a better burn which worked on the other two reburns. If it worked by slowing down the burn or by luck I can't say. The MKM-003 are a 8X media and using the half the burn speed rule of thumb of 4.0X has been fine up to these past few incidents.

        Gotcha.
Sounds like you've been throught it all and if it's working then...
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The only other item I see is:
        W 21:59:54 Failed to Read Sector 2196800 - Reason: L-EC Uncorrectable Error
        W 21:59:54 Sector 2196800 maps to File: \VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_2.VOB

You probably have done this, but at the risk of asking the obvious,
have you tried cleaning the disc?
Perhaps a defect in the disc?

You can try ticking Ignore all reading errors automatically, but you were already able to "rip" the dvd so this will probably result in the same error being reproduced and glitch on the bkup.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I think this error is in the verification phase of the burn. Does that mean that the burn and the file do not match?

Just for giggles I did another recode with the ripped folder containing the DVD9 size and compressed it using the DVD5 setting. Then I used imgburn to burn a SL disk and it burned and verified just fine. Based on this you would think the disk and the file created from the disk were good.

I am begining to confirm my belief that a problem occurs at the layer break. According to the log the break occurs at "Using Layer Break LBA: 874280 -> 2052464 (VTS_01, PGC: 1, Chapter: 7, Cell: 7, Vob/Cell ID: 1/7, Time: 00:32:21, SPLIP: Yes -> No)" which is about where the disk error occurs. Hardware or software created? I guess an external dvd burner isn't too bad to find out.

In any case I at least have a SL backup.

Does ImgBurn give you the option to select a layer break position before the burn. If it does try selecting a different layer break to see if same problem. Also have you watched the original DVD to see if it has playback problem at same spot as the back up

Yes it does. I can try another layer break choice and see what happens. Good suggestion!

I'll try it now and report back. It will probably take a while.

Ok. Changed the layer break and it errored out at the verification phase again. The burn log follows.

I chose a layer break further into the movie and it appears to have errored further into the verification. Upon testing the disk it now locks up at chapter 11.

So it appears to me that it has something to do with the layer break shift. Software or hardware? I guess the jury is still out. Or rather I guess I'll be the one out looking for an external burner to rule out a hardware issue.

Here is the log if it offers any clues.

EDIT - To answer the question of if the source disk plays ok the answer is yes. It plays flawlessly on both players.

Another write speed might give you better results.

What do you recommend? The medium is rated at 8X. Currently burning at 2.4X

                      Speeds: 2.4x, 4x, 6x

Either 4x or 6x are possible options.

Ok. I'll try at 4X and see what happens.

Just wanted to report that burning at 4X and changing nothing else created a sucessful burn.

Thanks for the help. I hope this solves it!

                            Go figure...
Initially you burned at 4X , but reduced to 2.4X for problem movies.
Now you're back to 4X for the problem disc and having good results.
I swear sometimes this stuff is like voodoo.

Anyway, we're glad to hear you have success.
As I said before, I really think that 2.4X is too slow for the MKM 003 discs (not that you can't try and get lucky though).

You just might find that the MKM 001 media (2.4X-4X) is a better fit with this burner and firmware
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
