Media inserted is dual layer. Error says it's single layer.

I'm getting an error message when trying to copy DVD to DVD, full disc or main movie.
"Media inserted in drive E: is single layer.
Please insert a double layer media to start the write process."

I'm using version DVDFAB 7.0.9.0. I've copied the source DVD to my local hard drive. I have quality set to DVD9 & I have a double layer DVD+R DVD in the burn drive. Why is it telling me it's a single layer? I've tried this with more than one DVD and keep getting the same error. This is the method that I believe I've been using for a quite some time with no problems. I've tried this trying to copy from the source DVD and from the source files on my HD.

I'm using Window XP, Media center edition with SP3. All drives are internal. I'm logged in as administrator. I have a lifetime license/registration that started probably a year and a half ago. No OS or hardware changes since the last successful burns.

Below is the last burn_vso 3 log sessions:

This is what is in the process log:
    19:28:55: Burn DVD folder (C:\Documents and Settings\Jeremy\My Documents\Jeremy's Videos\Movies & Shows\Zombieland\FullDisc\ZOMBIELAND\) started
    19:29:25: Task_2 failed! Error=122

Reason I am using DVD9 is that I'm assuming that compressing it to DVD5 would diminish the quality. Correct me if I'm 100% wrong on this. I prefer to have my copies as close to 100% of the quality of the original as possible.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Excellent advise by the Mods as always
If I can add something too your Drive has a firmware update you will find it here
NOTE: if you do not know how to flash your drive do not do it, it will render your drive useless

Well go figure. Windows coincidentally needed to install a security update after I posted this thread and it required a restart. After restarting I was able to burn to the DVD and so far everything seems to be working ok.

Gruñón - I'm not sure why the log says it is 7.0.4.0 as when I started DVDFAB it said there was an updated and if I wanted to install it. I said yes and let it install. Maybe the restart also help finish the install. I will post a new log file since it is working now to see if there is anything else you can see that could be an issue.

AGS - What does DVDFAB qualify as "good" or "best" media? Any suggestions? I'm sure there's a thread on this already but since you mentioned it I thought I'd ask and you would probably point me to the right thread.

CBR929 - Will the firmware update improve the use of my drive in any way? If so maybe some instructions to do what you are mentioning would be in order. Are there any risk or side effects involved in doing this?

            1) Good news, let's see what the next log says...for now
If it ain't broke, don't fix it

            2) The only recommended DL media is
Verbatim +R DL MIS (which is made in Singapore)
The MII stuff (made in India) is not a bad second choice, but MIS is preferable.
Both the MKM 001 (2.4-4X) and the MKM 003 (8X) are top notch and should serve you well.

            3) As CB said, a mis or bad flash can brick your burner, so tread carefully.
On the one hand, most of us old timers don't think twice about flashing firmware, but the potential for disaster is there, particularly if you've never done it.
Also depending on the drive, it's not always possible to go back easily or at all, if you don't like the updated firmware.
My recommendation is get everything else in order and then let's take a look at your firmware
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

              1) I agree, not broke, don't fix.
              2) How do I know if the disk is MIS? What does that mean?
              3) I'll leave the flash thing alone for now, just as long as everything is working. Just wish it would burn to the disk a little faster.

                MIS = made in Singapore.
You'll have to look on the spindle wrapper for the manufacturer's locale
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Hang on, I'll be back in a few and look over your burn log again
As always, Gruñón, AGJ and CBR929 gave you great advice so I doubt I'll see anything else, but another pair of eyes is never a bad thing

Your DVD drive is still in PIO Mode use DVDFab to reset it to DMA mode.
To reset DMA in Fab, go to
                      Common Settings > General
click on the Reset DMA tab

In the event you have problems...

To reset your burner to DMA try the following
(hopefully this will work with #1 as suggested by Chris and AGJ, but try these in the order listed until you achieve success)

                        1) Click on the Reset DMA tab in Fab > Common Settings > General

                        2) How to enable DMA in Windows XP

                        3) Uninstall your burner(s) in device manager. Power off. Reboot and windows will reinstall your burner(s) and assign the appropriate drivers

                        4) Run the registry patch found in my thread:
Tips on Troubleshooting Analyzing/Ripping dvds (#7)
                        (link in my sig below).

I would seriuosly consider switching to Img as the default burn engine.

                        Another thought about firmware...
It's not always best to simply update the firmware just because it's available.
Firmwares vary in their ability to handle blank media.
Usually newer firmware will be compatible with write strategies for media handled by older firmware for the same burner, but not always.

OEM manufacturers like HP will use brand name burners like LiteOn, Philips, LG, but they will have their own proprietary firmware and not the firmware for say LiteOn.
It will be HP's own firmware
Unfortunately, HP's firmware support is less than desirable.

When I get a chance, I'll try to track down the make and model of your burner unless someone like CBR929 (our resident firmware expert) beats me to it...

You might want to research the available firmware for this burner on HP's website and be sure to take a look at any user comments

I tried to view the instructions but i can not open it for some reason, so I decided to download the update and try to install on my machine, and the good news it comes with its own installer.

You will find it here from Hp http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...w_lang=&os=228

First you would have to download the update and click save, take note of where you are saving it to click open > double click the file > click run, and it should install itself restart your computer and your done.
                          Hope this helps

WOW. I reset the burner to DMA. Updated the burner using the link CBR929 provided and wow. This thing is burning a lot faster. Previously the burn rate would maybe top out at 1 MB/sec. if I'm lucking. Now it's quickly over 1 MB/sec. and keeps climbing. The last I saw it it was approaching 6 MB/sec. I didn't catch what the rate was by the end. So In short, what used to take a couple hours now took 20 minutes. Thanks a ton everyone for your help on this. You went above and beyond when all I was originally looking for was a fix to the error message I was getting.

Here is the latest log from my most recent burn:

                              Congrats,

I just peeked at your locale and you must have a Sam's Club close by.
My local Sam's had 'em for a regular price of about $46/50 pk and the last couple of times they dropped to $26/50 pk
These are the MKM 001 MIS discs.
You won't find a better deal.

If no go at Sam's, check Officemax and BestBuy.
Online, be sure to check newegg, meritline, supermediastore, rima and microcenter.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and... blow. | Lauren Bacall | "To Have and Have Not" (1944).
