Problems with DVDs in "split" mode

    Hello all,

I've been using DVD Fab for about the last year and a half or so to backup DVDs. Up until recently, I'd been burning DVDs using the "customize" or "full disc" (when the movie is short enough) options for the most part. However, I wasn't happy with the quality of some of the DVDs, so I started to burn uncompressed discs using "split" mode. Now, here's my problem: the discs burned in split mode are playable on my computer but NOT on my DVD player.

I can't figure out what the problem is---discs that I burn to one disc (compressed or not) play just fine on my DVD player, so why won't the "split" discs play? A friend of mine suggested lowering the write speed (it was at the default setting which was 8x), so I even tried that, first setting it at 6x, then 4x, but still no luck.

I only use Verbatim blanks (DataLifePlus #94854/Media ID: MCC 02RG20), and have had great success in the past using them. My operating system is Windows XP Professional/Service Pack 3 with 1GB memory and a Pentium 4. I have two external hard drives, one of which I will use for storing ripped discs (it is a 1TB Seagate; the primary HD is 40 GB). My DVD Player is a Sony DVD/VCR combo which has the ability to play DVD-R/RW discs.

The log below is from a burn of Iron Man 2 that I did today. I had previously burned this in the "split" mode, but as I mentioned before, this, like all other "split" burns would only play on my computer. The first burn was done at 8x, while I tried this one at 4x. Unfortunately, today's burn wouldn't play on my computer OR my DVD player. On the computer, when play was attempted, it would flash a few seconds of video and then shut off, while the DVD player says: DVD cannot be played (followed by an error code).

As you can see, my DVD drive is a Sony, which can write up to 20x, and the Verbatims up to 8x. One thing I did notice is that most of the more recent burns will at least display the menu, but the DVD will shut off when "play movie" or "select chapter" is clicked. The previous DVD burns wouldn't even display the menu---they wouldn't load and just stop. Please bear with me, as I am not too good with this kinda stuff.

Here is a log from the 15th with discs burned at 8x:

So, from those logs, can you tell if there's anything that I'm doing wrong or do you need more information? Thanks in advance-Al

    Hi daperfessa
    Burns look Ok, disc's finalized
You may be having trouble with the VSO burn engine, my suggestion is to install ImgBurn it is "free" and you will find it here along with a video tutorial on how to set it up , make sure to set the AWS up and burn at 1/2 the rated speed of your disc (which in this case would be 6x).

    Also
Open Fab Click the Green top right > General > make sure Check for DMA Automatically is Checked and also Click the Reset DMA to the right click OK and restart Fab.

You may also install the latest beta version

Give these a try and post back

        Success!!!

Well, the use of Image Burn seems to have done the trick, as my first burn with it was successful in playing in both my computer & my DVD player. A couple of quick questions before I end this post:

Does Image Burn have to be set individually for each media (Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden,Maxell, etc.) or is the setting at 6x the default setting for all?

Also, this may not be important, but I noticed this in the log for that burn I just did:

        I 20:47:26 Write Speed Successfully Set! - Effective: 16,620 KB/s (12x)

        And this:

        I 20:54:00 Average Write Rate: 11,518 KB/s (8.3x) - Maximum Write Rate: 16,672 KB/s (12.0x)

Does that mean the speed is set at 8x or 12x? I did set it at 6x. I double-checked the settings in Image Burn and it shows the media & device both set at 6x. Since I had a successful burn, chances are that might not be important. At any rate, thanks a lot for your help---much appreciated-Al

          Hi daperfessa

          Glad it's working

Yes, it will have to be set for each media, ImgBurn will remember that media and the speed you chose to burn it at.

Also, this may not be important, but I noticed this in the log for that burn I just did:

          I 20:47:26 Write Speed Successfully Set! - Effective: 16,620 KB/s (12x)

Please go through the steps in the tutorial again as it is set to burn at 12x, did you also Select Recommended Write Speed [only for use with ImgBurn Auto Write Speed] within Fab?

Again glad this worked for you

Okay, I see where I messed up. In Fab, I had it set at 6x instead of "recommended". I'll change that before the next burn. Thanks again! -Al

Please try to stay with Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden, as they are the best for video archiving.

Yeah, that's what I plan on doing now. I initially believed the Maxells to be good quality, but a friend told me they are actually Riteks, which are decent, but not recommended for archival purposes.

On another note, I came across some branded Verbatims, which turned out to be CMC media, which I not heard good things about. I think I'll stay away from branded Verbatims for now. Thanks for the advice-Al

Get verbatim that have AZO on the spindle label and you will not get the CMC junk
