newer versions of DVDFab do not correct errors

I have run into something odd...

Ive used DVDFab a long time. I am a paying customer. I have been very happy.

At first I thought I had bad dvd-r's, then I thought I had bad burners, then I thought maybe it was my dvd player...

But no...

It was the version of DVDFab..

It seems newer versions of DVDFab do not correct errors when reading. Older version do...

This results in a copy that works most times until like the last 10 minutes of the disc, or has jumps and stutters during play. The DVD plays fine in the computer or in he DVDPlayer. It seems something weird is occurring that if any tiny errors are on the DVD then they end up on the copy.

This has made DVDFab's current version of the software unusable.

I dropped in a older version, 6.1 and it works great with no errors at all.

This really needs to be addressed..

Also does anyone know what version is stable in this regard ?

I am using Image Burn and Image Burn reports perfect burns. I am using Verbatim DVD+R's as I always have. The exact same skips and hangs occur even if I use a different burner and brand of DVD-R at exactly the same spot.

Using 6.1X all the skips on multiple source DVD's where i saw the issues are gone. It works perfectly.

The problem seems to occur on dirty/scratched source DVD's. While they play fine it seems that when DVDFab goes to copy them the errors caused by the scratches/dirt are not fixed like they used to be with previous versions of DVDFab.

I have played with the read settings. Setting retries to 0 and skip to 0. So it should stop on any error it finds. It does not..

Also there is nothing in the logs that seems odd.

7.0.2.1 works fine.. So the problem occured after that..

I cant find any versions after 7.0.2.1 on the site... After that things switched to a single location that had the current beta...

Download and install VSO Inspector, do a surface scan on the original DVD to see if any read errors.

Do not do scan on the copy just the original DVD

His source disc are both dirty and scratched and it would seem he wants the software to clean and repair them.
It is not going to happen now and has never happened with the past versions.

I know but for some reason they think it not the original DVD problem but a DVDFab problem that why I said to use VSO inspector.

I beleive it could be the disc also but,
I think maybe this is what OP is talking about.........not sure

My Samsung 183 and 203's seem to be the best for scratched or bad pressed DVD's (for me anyway) but they cannot perform miracles.........

Thanks for your help.

I've been using DVDFab for a long time. I have done a lot of backups.

What I noticed recently was that some of my backups had skips, pauses, hangs and even flat unreadable discs. Mostly this was occuring at the end of the disc, but not always..

This was REALLY WEIRD considering that DVDFab did not report a problem reading the disc. I set retries to 5 and skip sectors to 0 and to report a problem when reading. It would copy the DVD and report no issues. Image Burn would burn the dvd and no issues were reported. They appeared like perfect copies.

But no... Some were not.

At first I thought maybe it was bad DVD+R's. However I have always used the same brand, Verbatim. I would stuff the orginal disc back in and do it again and at the same spot I would get hangs or skips.

Then I thought it was my drives. I used a different computer. Same result.

Then i thought it was my DVD player, so I used 2 different ones. They all skipped at the same place.

I can play the source discs in a DVD Player and they work fine. I can also play them using the computer with the same drive that reads them for DVDFab and they play fine...

In desperation I tried a older copy of DVDFab and the problem 100% disappeared. I have 3 DVD's that have small/slight minor scratches in about the places you would expect from where the movie skips/hangs. They play fine but 8.X copies them with skips. 7.X copies them perfectly. Same hardware, same blank DVD+R's, same everything...

This is a VERY weird result and this is why I am posting...

I will go download and use VSO Inspector and report back here shortly..

VSO reports 100% errors. Its not able to do CSS.

I am trying Nero DiscSpeed Scan disc to look at errors and raw error rate now..

Nope I can't use any of these tools to scan the original..

Any further suggestions on isolating the issue ?

Is there someplace I can download previous versions of 8.X ? and later versions of 7.X. Maybe I can more closely isolate when the problem occurred.

So when a DVD is CSS protected and DVDFab reads it, how are errors corrected ?

Also maybe the issue is simply that the settings for retries, skip sectors and reporting issues is broken and that the settings are not being applied or used during the real read ? It is acting like its set to default of 5 retries and skip 32 sectors even tho I have it set to skip 0 sectors.

XYMOX, I've been using DVDFAB for over 5 years! I have alot of dvd movies! I find alot of my original dvd's with scratches on them (do to children)! Scratches are from mild to savere!, and I couldn't back them up!, with any version of FAB! I went to FRY'S ELECTRONICS and bought a Disc machine, It's called a SKIP DR. It removes scratches,film build-up, and you can by replaceable wheels and solution for it! It works great, and is still working! All my bad dvd's will play on anything, blu-ray player, PC, dvdplayer!, and I re-backed them up with DVDFAB! Over the years with any vDVDFAB! Copy's are great! Not big at all on computers, but I know this little machine works! Hope this my help!
