DVD Ripper why do remux & 254 rips have different aspect ratios?

Using the Buried DVD, I have noticed that automatic cropping and resizing results in different output files when using mkv.remux as compared to generic.mkv.h264.audiocopy

When using h264 I am getting a resolution of 720x310 whereas remux gives me 720x480. (images attached)

With remux I can add a customized size of 720x310 and then it comes out the same as h264.

I am curious as to why these two methods wouldn't automatically produce the same output resolution?

remux changes nothing just makes mkv. The other mkv profiles changes the video and audio which would be why you see different resolution for them

I'll bet it is tied in with anamorphic encoding & cropping.

Have a read of this on Wikipedia if you wish to learn more.
