DVD Ripper Thinking of purchase

I have been using DVD copy for quite a few years, and outside of 2 hicups, have been very happy.
I am now looking for a product that will allow me to rip a DVD to a file, and watch it on Windows Media on a laptop, without having a disc installed, much like ripping a CD.
This has come to light due to a recent loss of power for a week, and while I was able to charge my battery, the DVD drive would eat it up before the movie would complete.
Am I looking at the right product?
