DVD Ripper work 1 failed, error=504

trying to rip a dvd to a couple different formats and get the error

"work 1 failed, error=504.00 0 error: filter name (503.09), type(32), ID(6), get fatal exception"

I have 8.1.6.3 and am not using the GPU acceleration (software only)
