DVD Ripper 2 pass encoding really really slow

I have been experimenting with some different options in DVD ripper, and I tried 2 pass encoding. After a couple minutes the estimated time was over 8 hours. This was way too long, so I switched it to 1 pass encoding and it completed with in 10 minutes.

So why the discrepancy? I thought 2 pass encoding would take 2x the time, not 200x the time.

BTW I am using Windows 7
    DVDfab 8.1.7.8
    mp4 iPad3.h.264 1080p encoding at 1600 kpbs

ryamc, it appears from your log that you are attempting 1080P from a standard definition DVD. Just use the iPad.h264 profile and set the bit rate high enough so that bit/pixel is 0.2 or higher and use one pass. Trying to make the frame resolution larger than the original is really a waste of time IMHO. The iPad will fill out the display and I think you'll be pleased with the result.
