What is the difference between iPad3.h264.1080p and iPad3.1080.mp4?

Are they both MP4 outputs?

If I select this, how will it play on something else if I want to play it on a computer or Xbox?

And to be clear, I'm trying to figure out a good generic format for backing up my Blu-Rays that won't limit me if I want to convert to other devices later. Should I be using a more generic mp4 or is the ipad3 stuff the best, and what do the different options there mean?
