hey guys, i am getting started with storing my blu rays in my pc and i am having problems with stuttering issues when i run the ripped blu ray through either itunes or Apple TV. i run them with windows media player and they work fine. i bought the dvdfab blu ray ripper program and it doesnt seem to have a option for Apple TV in the menu so its ripping for xbox360/mp4. it does however have one in the converter program so i went with the 30 day trial on that and it does seem to work after being converted. problem is i have about 100 or so blu rays and it adds about 30 minutes to each one so i will be there forever. i think my system is good, i just picked up a hp envy pc with 1 terabyte hard drive and 10 gigs of ram along with an Apple TV 3. i also picked up a lg blu ray reader/burner. the guy at the store said it was the best he had so i picked that one. it reads at x10 i believe. im somewhat familiar with computers but not nearly as much as you guys. well i guess my question is why go through this much trouble to run through itunes ? i also picked up a nintendo wii u and saw something about playon being a decent way to stream. i have to admit it would be sweet using that gamepad to look through my stuff. of course if i would have thought of it last week i could have gotten a year free but they ended it on the 24th. i would hate spending cash on it and then being dissapointed if it isnt good. i do have a xbox 360 and a ps3 so im sure i could run it through one of those but i think my wife would have trouble using it. either way i think i want to return the Apple TV and use something else. any suggestions ?

I have always used a "WDTV Live Plus" to play my media, never any problems. Plays most anything, no need for special conversion options. Im sure others will have good alternatives to recommend as well.
I cannot speak from experience on the Apple TV as I have never used one, but many years of experience with iPhone, iPad, Ipod Touch etc....I despise iTunes.
As for streaming over wifi, you will inherently have some issues when streaming large files with high bitrate. But it really depends on your devices communication.
As for playing mkv, mp4 etc straight from a media player..I love the WDTV live.Last edited by crackinhedz; 12-29-2012, 06:40 AM.

ok, i fortunately had about 12 different devices with media players. after many hours of trial and error i have found that playon lite streaming to a roku xd is damn near perfection. it works great and cinavia is a non issue.picture looks good too. so i am back to ripping my collection. i have been reading about rip speeds being calculated by MBS and i cannot find where to locate this info on my pc. i would love to know if i could get my ripping done faster. i have also been reading about rip lock hurting rip speed. as my setup sits i am ripping a 6gb movie in about an hour and 15 minutes. if the movie is 2 hours and it takes one hour to rip does that mean its ripping at 2x ? my reader says its good for 6x. does that mean a 2 hour movie should rip in 20 minutes ? this is all confusing to me and im having trouble looking up the answers. if its best case scenario then so be it but if i can reduce the time i am all ears. and also, is 6gb ok as far as size or should i be looking to reduce it in size somehow ?Last edited by papsmear; 01-02-2013, 12:44 AM.
